Beavers jump to No. 15 in national poll

MINNEAPOLIS -- After a series sweep at University of Alaska and extending its win streak to four games, Nov. 4-5, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team has jumped to 15 in the top 20 poll, while they received votes in the fifth straight USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll of the season.

This week marks the highest ranking for the Beavers this season and the fifth time they have appeared in the poll in 2016-17 and the 138th time since making a move to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 season. The Beavers have reached as high as No. 4 in the poll, Dec. 12, 2009, and have been a top 20 team for 36 weeks.

The University of Minnesota Duluth remained in the nation’s top spot this week. Minnesota Duluth was a unanimous vote for No. 1, receiving all 50 first place votes. The Bulldogs also took all 34 first place votes to retain the top spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

The Beavers join Minnesota State University Mankato, this week's No. 11, and Lake Superior State University, in the No. 20 spot, as the only WCHA representatives in the poll. MSU remains the league’s lone representative in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll at No. 11. However, Bemidji State and Lake Superior State University are receiving votes in the later poll.

The Beavers, now 8-2-0 overall, continues WCHA play this week as it travels to Mankato, Minn. for a two-game series at No. 11 Minnesota State. Both games are set for a 7:07 p.m. start.

The College Sports Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a joint production of, which provides in-depth coverage of college sports, including hockey, lacrosse, soccer and others, and CBS College Sports Networks, Inc., the only digital media company dedicated solely to college sports. CBS College Sports operates a 24-hour college sports cable network, also available via DISH and DirecTV satellite.

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll, now in its 15th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
