Bemidji State men’s hockey climbs to No. 10/12 in national polls

MINNEAPOLIS -- After a series sweep of Northern Michigan University, Nov. 18-19, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team has climbed to 10 in the top 20 poll, while earning the No. 12 spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, extending a run of eight weeks in the polls.

This week marks the eighth time the Beavers have appeared in the poll in 2016-17 and the 140th time since making a move to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 season. The Beavers have reached as high as No. 4 in the poll, Dec. 12, 2009, and have been a top 20 team for 40 weeks.

This week the Beavers earned 543 points to climb three spots in the poll, while the University of Minnesota Duluth reclaimed the top spot, garnering 48 of 50 first place votes and 996 points.

Bemidji State’s second straight week being ranked among the top 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll marks the Beavers’ highest ranking in the poll since it pulled down 206 points for the No. 9 spot March 22, 2010. BSU gained 163 points this week to jump two spots to No. 12.

BSU has now be among the top 15 in the poll 29 weeks since making the jump to the NCAA Division I level prior to the 1999-2000 season.

The University of Minnesota Duluth was back atop the USA Today/USA Hockey Poll after losing the No. 1 ranking to the University of Denver last week. The Bulldogs took 33 of 34 first place votes to slide back into the top spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

The Beavers join Minnesota State University Mankato, this week's No. 14 team in both polls, as the only Western Collegiate Hockey Association representatives in the national polls.

The Beavers, now 11-2-1 overall, now step away from WCHA play to host Princeton University, Nov. 25-26. BSU opens the series with the Tigers at 7:07 p.m. Friday with the series finale set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday at Sanford Center.

The College Sports Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a joint production of, which provides in-depth coverage of college sports, including hockey, lacrosse, soccer and others, and CBS College Sports Networks, Inc., the only digital media company dedicated solely to college sports. CBS College Sports operates a 24-hour college sports cable network, also available via DISH and DirecTV satellite.

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll, now in its 15th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
