Princeton tops Bemidji State 4-1 in series opener

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- A pair of second period goals propelled Princeton University to a 4-1 victory over No. 10 Bemidji State University Friday at Sanford Center.

The loss was not only the first for BSU since Oct. 22 at then-No. 1 University of North Dakota, it also stands as the Tigers' first win of 2016-17 as they improve to 1-6-1 overall.

Despite several solid chances by the Beavers, including three shots of the post during the first 35 minutes of up and down play, the Tigers took the first lead late in the second. Ryan Kuffner netted his second goal of the season at the 15:45 with help from Jeremy Germain.

Fewer than three minutes later, the Tigers would put BSU in a 2-0 hole when Joe Grabowski found the back of the net after corralling an Eric Robinson rebound off the pads of BSU goaltender Michael Bitzer.

Faced with their largest deficit since trailing North Dakota, 5-3, midway through the third period Oct. 22, the Beavers opened the third period on the power play. While BSU failed to convert its first man advantage opportunity of the game, the opportunity tilted the game in BSU’s favor. At the 12:39 mark, Brendan Harms netted his sixth goal of the season on BSU’s second power-play opportunity of the night, reeling the Tigers to within a goal.

Princeton answered at the 16:13 mark.

In an attempt to trim the deficit, BSU head coach Tom Serratore pulled Bitzer for an extra attacker with just over three minutes to play. The advantage would not last long as the team was whistled for a bench minor and finished the game with a player in the penalty box.

Kuffner added a empty-net goal at the 19:10 mark to put the final nail in the coffin.

The Beavers, now 11-3-1 overall, will attempt to even the series tomorrow when the teams meet in the series finale.  The opening face off is set for 7:07 p.m. at Sanford Center. Fan are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food donation to help the Beavers and Marketplace Foods replenish the Bemidji Area Food Shelf. In exchange for a donation, fans will receive a voucher to buy a $12 ticket or be entered into a drawing for one of two $50 gift cards from Marketplace Foods or a pair of tickets to the 2017 North Star College Cup.
