Bemidji State men's hockey back in both national polls

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team is No. 13 in the USCHO.com top 20 poll, and returned to the top 15 of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll following it’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association series split at Michigan Tech.

At No. 13, this week marks the 10th consecutive week the Beavers have appeared in the USCHO.com poll in 2016-17 and the 142th time since making a move to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 season. The Beavers have reached as high as No. 4 in the poll, Dec. 12, 2009, and have been a top 20 team for 40 weeks.

This week the Beavers earned 348 points to hold the No. 13 spot for the second straight week in the USCHO.com poll, while Dec. 16-17 opponent, the University of Minnesota Duluth remained in the top spot, garnering 44 of 50 first place votes and 993 points.

After a week out of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine’ top 15, Bemidji State returned at No. 15, marking the seventh consecutive week BSU has made an appearance in the poll and 63 weeks receiving at least one vote since making the jump to the NCAA Division I level prior to the 1999-2000 season.

The University of Minnesota Duluth was atop the USA Today/USA Hockey Poll for the third straight week and fifth week this season. The Bulldogs took 31 of 33 first place votes.

The Beavers are the only WCHA representative in the USA Today/USA Hockey Poll, while Minnesota State University, Mankato, is No. 16 and Michigan Tech is receiving votes in the USCHO.com survey.

The Beavers, now 12-5-1 overall and 12-1-1-1 in league play, returns to Sanford Center Dec. 9-10 to host Lake Superior State University. The WCHA series will get underway at 7:07 p.m. Friday with a 7:07 opening face-off also set for Saturday.

The USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a joint production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college sports, including hockey, lacrosse, soccer and others, and CBS College Sports Networks, Inc., the only digital media company dedicated solely to college sports. CBS College Sports operates a 24-hour college sports cable network, also available via DISH and DirecTV satellite.

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll, now in its 15th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
