Bitzer and Beavers sweep Michigan Tech with 3-0 shutout

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Michael Bitzer posted 27 saves to lead the Bemidji State University men's hockey team to a 3-0 shutout victory over Michigan Tech Saturday, completing the sweep and taking another step toward a regular-season title and hosting the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs throughout.

Offensively, Justin Baudry, who had a hand in all three goals (1g-2a), paced the Beavers. Myles Fitzgerald added a goal and an assist and Kyle Bauman accounted for the game-winning tally.

The Beavers opened the game with a burst, needing just 60 seconds to get on the scoreboard. Bauman finished a breakout chipping a pass from Phillip Marinaccio past the MTU goaltender, Angus Redmond, for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Bemidji State’s lead swelled to 2-0 at the 16:17 mark of the second period when Justin Baudry trailed Myles Fitzgerald and tapped in his second goal in as many weeks. Zach Whitecloud was also credited with an assist, starting the scoring play behind BSU’s net.

BSU added another goal early in the third period when Baudry returned the favor setting Myles Fitzgerald up on the doorstep.

With only three power play opportunities awarded on the night, special teams was a non-factor. BSU’s NCAA-best penalty-kill unit snuffed out both MTU chances, while the Beavers’ power-play unit came up dry on its only opportunity of the evening.

The shutout is Bitzer's fifth of the season, tying him with three others for the nation's lead.  It also gives him 15 during his BSU career, extending his all-time program record. In addition, the win stood as the 45th of his career tying him with BSU0great Matt Climie (2004-08) for ninth on BSU’s all-time wins list.

Needing just one win to sew up the 2016-17 league regular-season championship, the Beavers (17-11-3; 17-4-2-2 WCHA) hit the road Feb. 10-11 for a WCHA series at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The teams open the series at 7:07 p.m. Friday with a 7:07 p.m. opening face off set for Saturday at Von Braun Arena in Huntsville, Ala.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
