Brady and Combs lead Beavers to 7-1 victory over Lake Superior State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Adam Brady and Charlie Combs each scored twice, while blueliner Kyle Looft added a pair of assists to lead the Bemidji State University men's hockey team to a 7-1, series-opening victory over Lake Superior State University Friday.

Recording their highest scoring output since Dec. 4, 2009, the Beavers' scoring came in bunches.  After struggling to keep up with the Lakers during the first six minutes of play, BSU made its own breaks and took advantage of opportunities to build a 3-0 during the final 14 minutes of the frame. Brady got BSU on the board at the 6:36 mark, when Hampus Sjödahl found the senior in the slot with a pass from behind the net. Ninety seconds later, Combs redirected a slap shot off the stick of Looft up and over the LSSU goaltender’s, Mareks Mittens, right shoulder to put BSU up 2-0 (8:06). Brady put the Beavers up 3-0 with his fourth goal of the season and second of the night after stepping in front of a pass and beating the goaltender with a shot tucked just inside the right post.

BSU held a three-goal lead deep into the second period but would add to it before the second intermission. At the 12:16 mark, Aaron Miller sniped his second goal of the season with help from Will Zmolek and Looft before Brad Johnson found Alex Ierullo with a pass in the slot and the sophomore beat Mittens for BSU's fifth goal of the night.

The Beavers' lead grew to 7-0 at the 8:29 mark of the third period when Combs scored just 70 seconds after Nick Cardelli’s first goal of the season.

At the 11:19 mark, Max Humitz broke up the shutout netting his team-best six goal of the season.

Driscoll, who was making his third consecutive start, finished with 26 saves on 27 shots faced to gain his second win of the season and improve to 2-2-1 overall and 2-1 in WCHA play.

Bemidji State outshot the Lakers 41-27 in the game, logging its largest shot total of the season.

The Beavers, now 2-3-2 overall and 2-1-0-0 versus WCHA competition will attempt to claim their first series sweep of the season tomorrow then they host LSSU at 6:07 p.m. to wrap up the series.
