Muck tabbed as WCHA Defenseman of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Bemidji State University senior blueliner Tommy Muck has been selected as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the Week after helping to lead the Beavers to a five-point weekend series at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Muck tallied with two points (2a) to help the Beavers take the series and extend their unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). He logged a two assist in Friday’s 4-1 victory and logged a 3-on-3 overtime goal that earned BSU an extra point in the WCHA standings following a 2-2 tie with the Seawolves Saturday. He led all BSU players with two assists and posted a team-best +4 plus/minus rating. He was also a part of a BSU power-play unit that was 2-for-9 on the weekend and played a role on the BSU penalty-kill unit that held UAA to 2-for-8 on the man advantage.

Muck currently ranks sixth on the team, and second among BSU defensemen, with career-high 18 points (4g-14a) through 32 games. With two regular-season games remaining in his senior season, Muck already has established career highs in goals, assists and points.

The award is the fourth of its kind for Muck and the third this season. He was also selected for the league’s Defenseman of the Week honor November 25 and Jan. 13 and earned the league’s Defenseman of the Month award in January.

In addition to Muck, Minnesota State University’s Marc Michaelis was selected as the league’s Forward of the Week, Dryden McKay earned top goaltender honors and Lucas Sowder was named WCHA Rookie of the Week.

The Beavers, now 19-8-5 overall and 19-4-3-2 in WCHA play, return to Bemidji, Minn. and Sanford Center Feb. 28 and 29 to host No. 3 Minnesota State for the final weekend series of the 2019-20 regular season. With just five points separating the Beavers from the league-leading Mavericks in first place, the conference regular-season title will be up for grabs. The puck will drop at 7:07 p.m. Friday and again at 6:07 p.m. Saturday.
