COLORDO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team was among the top 15 teams in the country, according to the USAToday/USA Hockey Magazine Division I Men’s Hockey Poll, for the season straight week. This week the 19-8-5 Beavers climbed up two positions into the No. 11 spot. BSU also slid up to 11 in the USCHO.com Division I Men’s Hockey Poll. The jump in the poll comes on the heels of a five-point series victory at University of Alaska Anchorage, Feb. 21-22, to extend the Beavers’ unbeaten streak to seven games and improve to 11-1-2 since Jan. 3.
No. 11 billing marks the first time BSU has climbed to the fringe of the top 10 in the USAToday/USA Hockey poll since it was slotted No. 9, March 22, 2010. It also stands as the 35th week BSU has been ranked in the top 15 dating back to 1999-2000 season when the Beavers made the jump to the NCAA Division I level. Bemidji State has ascended as high as No. 4 in the poll, Dec. 12, 2010.
This year, BSU has regularly received votes USCHO.com poll and has appeared among the top 20 for the last five weeks, which including this week marks the Beavers’ 53nd week top as a top-20 program.
The University of North Dakota held down the nation’s top spot in the UASToday/USA Hockey Poll, while Cornell took the top spot in the USCHO.com ranking.
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association was also represented in the Feb. 24 USAToday/USA Hockey poll by Minnesota State University, which garnered 463 points and six first-place votes points to sit at No. 3. MSU also received 940 points and 14 first-place votes to hold down the No. 2 spot in the USCHO.com poll. In addition, both Bowling Green State University (8) and University and Northern Michigan (1) received votes in the USCHO.com poll.
The Beavers, now 19-8-5 overall and 19-4-3-2 in WCHA play, return to Bemidji, Minn. and Sanford Center Feb. 28 and 29 to host No. 2/3 Minnesota State for the final weekend series of the 2019-20 regular season. With just five points separating the Beavers from the league-leading Mavericks in first place, the conference regular-season title will be up for grabs. The puck will drop at 7:07 p.m. Friday and again at 6:07 p.m. Saturday.
The USCHO.com poll consists of 50 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.
The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll, now in its 25th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
