Bemidji State climbs into top 10 in both national polls

COLORDO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team was among the top 15 teams in the country, according to the USAToday/USA Hockey Magazine Division I Men’s Hockey Poll, for the third consecutive week. This week the 20-9-5 Beavers climbed up one spot No. 10 in both national polls. The jump in the poll comes on the heels of a series split with Minnesota State University, Mankato to cap the regular season, Feb. 28-20.

No. 10 billing marks the first time BSU has climbed into top 10 in the USAToday/USA Hockey poll since it was slotted No. 9, March 22, 2010. It also stands as the 36th week BSU has been ranked in the top 15 dating back to 1999-2000 season when the Beavers made the jump to the NCAA Division I level. Bemidji State has ascended as high as No. 4 in the poll, Dec. 12, 2010.

This year, BSU has regularly received votes poll and has appeared among the top 20 for the last six weeks, which including this week, marks the Beavers’ 54nd week top as a top-20 program.

The Cornell University held down the nation’s top spot in the USAToday/USA Hockey Poll and in the ranking.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association was also represented in the March 2 USAToday/USA Hockey poll by Minnesota State, which garnered 451 points and two first-place votes points to sit at No. 3. MSU also received 881 points and one first-place vote to hold down the No. 3 spot in the poll. In addition, both Bowling Green State University (23) and University of Alaska (4) received votes in the poll.

The Beavers, 20-9-5 overall, finished the 2019-20 regular season second in the WCHA standings going 20-5-3-2 versus WCHA competition. BSU clinched the No. 2 seed in the league’s postseason tournament and will return to Bemidji, Minn. and Sanford Center this weekend to host a best-of-three first round series versus Lake Superior State University. The puck will drop at 7:07 p.m. Friday to open the series with a 6:07 p.m. start set for Saturday and again Sunday, if a third game is needed to decide the series.

The poll consists of 50 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey. 

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll, now in its 25th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
