Bemidji State finishes season at No. 11 in national poll

COLORDO SPRINGS, Colo. –The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team finished the 2019-20 season at No. 11 in the Poll to complete a five-week run among the top 15 teams in the country. This week the 22-10-5 Beavers were one of four Western Collegiate Hockey Association member teams to appear in the final national poll. 

The No. 11 billing this week marks the eighth consecutive poll BSU has been voted among the top 20 in the national poll. After 10 weeks among teams receiving votes in the poll, BSU made its debut at No. 19 a debut Jan. 27. In the eight weeks since, the Beavers climbed as high as No. 10 in the March 2 ranking.

The final poll of the 2019-20 season marks the Beavers’ 56nd week top as a top-20 program since it made the move to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 campaign.

BSU also spent four weeks among the top 15 in the USAToday/USA Hockey Division I Men’s Hockey Poll. After an appearance at No. 13 Feb. 17, the Beavers climbed as high as No. 10 in the March 2 poll.

The Cornell University held down the nation’s top spot for the third straight poll, garnering 25 first-place votes and 954 points. The Big Red finished the year 23-2-4 overall.

The WCHA was also represented in the March 23 poll by Minnesota State, which garnered 926 points and six first-place votes points to sit No. 3. In addition, Bowling Green State University (31) and Michigan Technological University (1) received votes in the poll.

The Beavers, 22-10-5 overall, finished the 2019-20 regular season second in the WCHA standings going 20-5-3-2 versus WCHA competition. BSU clinched the No. 2 seed in the league’s postseason tournament and defeated Lake Superior State University in a best-of-three quarterfinal playoff series before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The poll consists of 50 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey. 

The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll, now in its 25th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
