COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team finished the 2019-20 season ranked No. 11 in the final USA Today/USA Hockey Poll of 2019-20 to complete a five-poll run among the top 15 teams in the country. The 22-10-5 Beavers were one of two Western Collegiate Hockey Association member teams to appear in the final poll of the season.
The No. 11 billing this week marks the fifth consecutive poll BSU has been voted among the top 15 and the seventh week this season the Beavers have been made an appearance in the national poll. After two weeks among teams receiving votes in the poll, beginning Feb. 3, BSU made its debut at No. 13 Feb. 17. The seat at No. 13 marked the Beavers’ first appearance in the USAToday/USA Hockey Magazine poll since No. 15, Dec. 14, 2016. In the four polls since, Bemidji State climbed as high as No. 10 in the March 2 ranking.
The final poll of the 2019-20 season marks the Beavers’ 38th week as a top-15 program since it made the move to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 campaign.
BSU’s five-poll run among the top 15 and its seven weeks with an appearance in the poll during the 2019-20 season mark its most regular appearance in the poll since it earned five top-15 billings and an appearance in the poll for 13 weeks in 2016-17. It also stands as the Beavers’ highest placement in the final poll of a season since it landed among the top 15 to conclude the 2009-10 campaign.
Cornell University held down the nation’s top spot for the fourth straight poll, garnering 23 first-place votes and 487 points. The Big Red finished the year 23-2-4 overall.
The WCHA was also represented in the April 13 USCHO.com poll by Minnesota State, which garnered 460 points and two first-place votes points to sit No. 3.
The Beavers, 22-10-5 overall, finished the 2019-20 regular season second in the WCHA standings going 20-5-3-2 versus WCHA competition. BSU clinched the No. 2 seed in the league’s postseason tournament and defeated Lake Superior State University in a best-of-three quarterfinal playoff series before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll, now in its 25th year, is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
