SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Taffy Abel Arena) – Tied 1-1 50 minutes into play, Bemidji State University senior forward Brendan Harris found the back of the net, and BSU would add a pair of empty-net goals late, to tilt the non-conference battle in favor of the Beavers and hand Lake Superior State University its first loss of the season, 4-1, Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
In a game that saw a total of 11 penalties called the teams combined for 0-for-11 on the man advantage pushing special teams play off the scoresheet.
Harris led all players with two points (2g), while five other Beavers tallied at least one point.
Bemidji State got the first goal of the game at the 18:12 mark of the first period when sophomore defender Kyle Looft netted the first goal of his collegiate career to put the Beavers in front, 1-0, heading into the first intermission. Nick Cardelli and Tyler Kirkup were credited with assists on the play.
Lake Superior State came back to even the score at the 5:26 mark of the second period on a goal by Miroslav Mucha.
Harris broke the 1-1 deadlock midway through the third period (10:29) on his second goal of the season just five seconds after the Beavers’ fifth power-play opportunity of the evening expired. The play was set up by passes off the sticks of Lukas Sillinger and Brad Johnson.
With 55 seconds to play Alex Ierullo found Aaron Miller for an empty-net goal, his first of 2020-21, to give the Beavers a two-goal cushion before Harris picked off a LSSU pass and buried an unassisted, empty-net goal to give BSU a 4-1 victory.
Senior goaltender Zach Driscoll backstopped a BSU penalty-kill unit that was a perfect 5-for-5 while turning aside 30 of the 31 shots he faced to grab his second victory of the season. He improves to 2-3-1.
BSU, 2-3-1 overall this season, looks to complete its first series sweep of the season and even its record at 3-3-1 tomorrow when the Beavers again meet the Lakers (4-1-2) to wrap up the two-game, non-conference series. The opening faceoff for the series finale is set for 2:07 p.m. (CT).
