BSU to host athletics events without spectators through the end of January

BEMIDJI, Minn.  -- The presidents of the six Minnesota State universities which sponsor intercollegiate athletics (Minnesota State University, Mankato; Minnesota State University, Moorhead; St. Cloud State University; Southwest Minnesota State University; and Winona State University, in addition to Bemidji State University) have agreed to not allow spectators at home athletic events through the end of January.

All state universities are currently operating under guidance from the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities to limit in-person activities on campus until February 1. This decision aligns home athletic events with that guidance. Presidents of these same six institutions will continue to evaluate this situation as local COVID scenarios and guidance from the Minnesota State system, the Minnesota Department of Health and others allows.

We share in the desire to have fans back in attendance at our home events and understand the challenges that come from not allowing spectators — particularly for the friends and families of our student-athletes. The health and safety of our student-athletes and support staff remains our top priority. We wish to create scenarios that allow our student-athletes to continue competition in the safest environment we can create for them.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
