Driscoll posts Senior Day shutout to lead BSU to 4-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Zach Driscoll posted his second consecutive shutout, while Ross Armour and Alex Adam each collected a goal and an assist as the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team posted a 4-0 victory over University of Alabama-Huntsville Sunday afternoon to ride a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep into the first round of the postseason.

The 13-8-3 Beavers completed the WCHA season 8-5-1 to finish fourth in the WCHA standings and earn right to host the first round of the league’s playoffs. The Beavers welcome Michigan Technological University (17-10-1; 7-7-0 WCHA) for a best-of-three series for the right to advance to the semifinal round March 12-14. The series will get underway at 7:07 p.m. Friday, with a 6:07 opening faceoff Saturday and a 5:07 p.m. puck drop Sunday, if needed.

A limited number of tickets for the series will go on sale at the Sanford Center Box Office or online at Ticketmaster.com at 10 a.m. Monday morning.

Bemidji State took control of the game early. BSU’s leading scorer Alex Ierullo cleaned up a rebound out of a scrum in front to net his six goal of the season just 2:11 into the first period. Tyler Kirkup and Lukas Sillinger were both credited with assists on the play. Sillinger took the initial shot and Kirkup was on the left post to feed Ierullo in the slot.

The lead would stay 1-0 deep into the second period, but at the 13:52 mark Brad Belisle corralled a deflection off the UAH goaltender’s leg and deposited into the back of the net from the doorstep. Brendan Harris recorded his seventh point in BSU’s last six games, netting an assist on the play.

BSU increased its lead to three goals, 3-0, 1:52 into the third period. Adams fired a shot from the high slot that Armour deflected past Derek Krall for the Beavers’ third goal and 26 seconds later, BSU struck again this time off the stick of Adams.

Driscoll finished the afternoon with 13 saves for his second shutout in as many games and the 10th of his Beaver Hockey career. He moves to 12-8-3 on the season.

Prior to the game, the Beavers celebrated their 2020-21 senior class of: Ethan Somoza, Aaron Miller, Brad Johnson, Brendan Harris, Tyler Vold and Zach Driscoll.
