SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Taffy Abel Arena) -- Jere Vaisanen scored twice and Gavin Enright stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced to lead the Bemidji State University men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory at Lake Superior State University Saturday to complete the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep.
For just the third time all season, the Beavers found themselves in a hole early after their opponent scored first. It took the Lakers only 3:37 before Cole Craft beat Enright for a goal. However, the Beavers answered with two goals during the next nine minutes to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. Vaisanen netted his first collegiate goal at the 9:44 mark with help from Aaron Myers. Fellow newcomer Jakub Lewandowski netted his second point of the series when he scored an even-strength goal at the 12:28 mark to put the Beavers in the lead for good. Tyler Kirkup was credited with an assist on the scoring play.
The Beavers and Lakers played a scoreless second period, despite a trio of power-play opportunities for BSU in the frame.
BSU opened the third clinging to a one-goal lead, a position they have been in eight games this season. Vaisanen added an unassisted, insurance goal at the 3:29 mark of the period to provide the Beavers with a cushion.
LSSU would get a goal back at the 13:16 mark to cut the BSU lead in half, 3-2.
During the game's final moments, Lake Superior State pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker. The gamble was stymied by the Beavers. At the 18:48 mark, Brad Johnson and Alex Ierullo set up Owen Sillinger's third goal and fifth point of the weekend. The goal put the game out of reach.
The Beavers finished the night 0-for-4 on the man advantage, while their penalty-kill unit was flawless in two LSSU power-play chances.
The Beavers improved to 6-4-0 overall and 5-1-0 in league play. BSU will return to Bemidji, Minn., and Sanford Center Nov. 19-20 to host Michigan Technological University for a two-game CCHA series. The series is set for a 7:07 p.m. opening faceoff Friday before closing out the weekend with a 6:07 p.m. start Saturday.
Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association, respectively, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
