Tuesday, February 26, 2008
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Bemidji State University All-America thrower Joe Remitz (North Branch, Minn.) has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week for his record-setting performance at the Beaver Twilight Feb. 21. The announcement was made by the league office Tuesday morning.

Remitz claimed first place in the shot put and the weight throw surpassing his own school-record distances in each. He stretched the tape to 58-01.75 in the shot put surpassing the old school mark by eight inches while adding several inches to his longest throw of 2007-08 to rank third in all of NCAA Division II this season. The senior also moved up to 10th in the country in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 59-09.50. The toss was his best of the season and was a half of an inch beyond to the school record he set a year ago.

If the season were to end today, Remits would more than likely head to Mankato, Minn. to participate in both throwing events at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. His mark in the shot put has automatically qualified him in that event while there are between 12-18 participants selected to compete in the weight throw.

Remits is a two-time participant in the shot put at the national meet but the weight throw invite would be a first for the senior.

Sharing NSIC Athlete of the Week honors with Remitz are: Wayne State’s Katie Wilson who was picked field athlete of the week, female track athlete of the week Cassie Blazer form the University of Mary and male track athlete of the week Northern State’s Bill Cameron.

The league honor marks the second of the 2007-08 indoor season and the sixth of his collegiate career.

Remitz and the rest of the Bemidji State track and field team rolls out the red carpet for the remainder of the 2008 NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend (Feb. 29 and Mar. 1). Field events begin Friday at 2 p.m. with preliminary running events and relays to begin at 6 p.m. The championship continue on to Saturday when the remainder of the field events will take place between 9-11 a.m. with track finals beginning at 12:00 p.m. An awards ceremony has been planned to conclude the event and will follow the 4x400-meter relay finals which are set for 3 p.m.
