Leonhardt leads BSU to sixth at Bison Open
FARGO, N.D. -- Bemidji State University opened a hectic weekend of outdoor track and field competition Saturday traveling to Fargo, N.D to complete in the Bison Open. BSU’s men’s and women’s teams each placed sixth in the meet.

Junior sprinter Kristi Buerkle (Stacy, Minn.) paced all BSU tracksters at the meet, finishing first in the 400-meter dash (56.20) and third in the 200-meters, while running a leg of the Beavers’ 4x100-meter relay that crossed the finish line in fifth place.  Although she finished third in the 200, her time of 25.19 was just .09 off her own school record time set in the spring of 2008 and stands as her fastest time of the young outdoor season.

Also performing well for the BSU women was Chelsea Preble (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.). The senior captured third place in the javelin throw with a season-best 121-11.

Brian Leonhardt’s (So., Blaine, Minn.) performance in the shot put highlighted the event for the Beaver men.  The sophomore multi-sport athlete stretched the tape to 48-07.56 to place second in event.  Raphael Gelo (Fr., Kabetogama, Minn.) and Nate Bahr (Sr., Clearbrook, Minn.) placed fourth in their respective events.  Gelo cleared 14-07.25 in the pole vault, while Bahr’s 40-10.50 in the triple jump seated him fourth among his peers.

The BSU men’s and women’s track and field teams will be back in action Sunday as the squads split to complete in two events.  Most of the team will travel to Bismarck, N.D to participate in the Marauder Open, while selected multi-event athletes will head to Collegeville, Minn. to complete in the first day of the St. John’s Multis.
