BSU captures 19 event titles at Beaver Classic
BEMIDJI, Minn. (Gillett Fitness-Recreation Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams captured 19 event titles Saturday as they hosted the Beaver Classic at the Gillett Recreation-Fitness Center. The BSU women had five different student-athletes post top finishes, while six Beaver men took first place. In addition, both teams earned victories in the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay events.

Standout sprinter Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) led the BSU women claiming three event titles on the day. Buerkle paced fellow teammates Ashley Larva (Fr., Floodwood, Minn.) and Ciara Robinson (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) to win the 60-meter dash (8.04), finishing first, second, and third respectively. Again, Buerkle lead the way as the Beavers took the top three spots in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.30. Buerkle turned in her third victory of the day in the 400-meter dash, running a season-best time of 56.52.

Senior distance runner Genna Ironi (Sauk Centre, Minn.) turned in season-best times while taking first in both the one-mile run (5:47.74) and the 3000-meter run (11:59.76).

Freshman Jacob Nelson (Pierz, Minn.) led the way for the men as he won both the 60-meter dash (7.24) and 200-meter dash (23.06). In the 400-meter dash Mark Buerkle (So., Stacy, Minn.) turned in his best effort on the season to take the top spot, posting a time of 51.45.

In the field the Beavers where lead by Paul Wagner (So., Fisher, Minn.) and Raphael Gelo (So., Kabetogama, Minn). Wagner won the high jump reaching a season-best height of 6-02.00, while Gelo took first in the pole vault clearing 14-09.00.

The Bemidji State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams are in action next weekend when they travel to St. Cloud, Minn. to compete in the Husky Open.
