Bemidji State women picked ninth in NSIC coaches' poll; Men 10th
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University women’s and men’s track and field teams were picked to finished ninth and 10th, respectively, today as league officials unveiled the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference 2011 Preseason Outdoor Track and Field Coaches’ Polls.  

The BSU women’s team garnered 27 to sit ninth among its conference counterparts. The league’s coaches selected defending NSIC women’s outdoor team champion University of Mary as the favorite to finish the season as team champions this spring with 10 first-place votes and the maximum 100 points. Augustana College received the other first-place vote and totaled 90 points to finish second, while Winona State University rounded out the top three squads in the poll with 83 points.

The Beaver men collected 11 points to finish 10th among the NSIC’s men’s teams.  Minnesota State University Moorhead earned the honor of being projected as the NSIC’s top team heading into the outdoor campaign.  The Dragons received eight first-place votes and 80 points to hold down the top spot.  Minnesota State University, Mankato collected one first-place vote and generated 69 points to edge Augustana (68), which garnered the last first-place vote, by one point to finish second.

The NSIC recognized MSU Moorhead’s Derek Bredy and Anthony Enyi as its Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the year, respectively, while Augustana’s Runa Falch and Melissa Walker of U-Mary and earned the league’s top individual women’s preseason honors.

BSU’s Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.), Taylor Sautbine (So., Cloquet, Minn.), Raphael Gelo (So., Kabetogama, Minn.) and Sam Bofferding (Sr., Marshall,. Minn.) were named NSIC 2011 Track and Field Athletes to Watch in the same announcement.

The Bemidji State outdoor track season gets underway this weekend as the teams travel to St. Paul, Minn. to participate in the Hamline Invitational.  Weather permitting, the event will take place at Robert and Alexandra Klas Center.
