Bemidji State opens 2003 with a split

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State softball team hit the field today to open its 2003 season versus the University of Minnesota-Morris. The Beavers took the first game 9-2 but the Cougars came back in the second half of the double-header to steal a 6-4 win.

The first game was dominated by Bemidji State’s senior ace, Katie Hurst. The Cloquet, Minn. native pitched seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out six.

The Beavers took the lead early. After Hurst sat the Cougars down in order in each of the first three innings, BSU would sting hits together take a 6-0 lead into the fourth inning.

In the fourth, the Cougars would get three of their five hits and drive two runs home. But the Beavers would respond. Lauren Wilson led off with a walk. Megan Bray would advance her to second with a single up the middle. And Betsy Hegland would reach on a wild pitch as the catcher could not handle the third strike. Jess Radermacher took advantage of having runners in scoring position as she doubled to center field, scoring two runs.

Hurst would settle down and get nine of the last 10 batters she faced.

BSU added one more run in the sixth when Hurst would reach on a single and take second on a wild pitch by the Cougar pitcher. Megan Bray would follow her with an RBI double.

Bray led all Bemidji State players going 4-4, scoring a run, and adding an RBI. Jess Radermacher was 3-4 with two RBI’s in the game.

In the second game, the Cougars got on the board after two scoreless innings of play, using a four-run inning to vault them to victory. After retiring the first batter, the BSU pitcher, Bowen, would put a Cougar on base when she hit her. UM-Morris would follow that with singles by Joanie Lofgren and Katie Taylor to load the bases. Mistica Olson would drive two runs in with her two-run double over Betsy Hegland’s head in center field. Rachel Beckman cleared the bases with a single to give UMM four runs.

BSU cut the lead in half during the fourth inning when Kara Nicolet reached on an error and Laura Wiedewitsch reached on a fielder’s choice. Shawne Koch would advance the runners and reach when the Cougar defense went to hold the runner at third. Lauren Wilson followed with a two-run double before BSU was shut down for the inning.

In the top of the sixth, UMM would add two more to its total. Amanda Quigley would reach on an error by Koch at third base. BSU’s Bowen would sit the next two batters down, but the Cougar’s Krista Wynn would drive Quigley home with a single, and after Wynn was advanced to second she was batted home with a Katie Taylor single.

The Beavers would come back to match UMM’s two-run sixth, but would not be able to muster anything up during the seventh inning and fell to the Cougars, 6-4.

The Beavers are now 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in NSIC competition. BSU takes the field again Saturday as they will play in the NSIC crossover hosted by Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.
