Mary (N.D.) hands BSU a pair of 9-1 losses

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team was defeated 9-1 in each game of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader in Bismarck, N.D. BSU’s offense was stifled both games and the defense was plagued by two errors in each game against the University of Mary.

In the opener, the Beavers got on the board first with a sacrifice fly from Ashley Leopold (Fr., INF, Afton, Minn.) that scored Katie Prettyman (So., OF, International Falls, Minn.) from third base to take a 1-0 lead.

Mary answered with six runs in the bottom half of the second, three more in the bottom of the third. The Marauder offense was led by home runs from Dre Brunskill in the second and Leslie Benavidez in the third.

Kristen Paine (Jr., P, Chisholm, Minn.) was on the mound for BSU, lasting just 2.1 innings before giving way to reliever Lindsey Imhof (Sr., P, Littlefork, Minn.). Paine allowed eight runs (four earned) on eights, while striking out one UM batter. Imhof’s relief performance was a bright spot for BSU, as she allowed just one run (zero earned) on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The nightcap seemed identical with the Beavers taking another 9-1 loss, which including two errors that led to six unearned runs for the Marauders.

Mary pieced together three runs in the second, one in the third, and three more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before BSU got on the board with a solo home run by Bridget Smith (So., INF, Burnsville, Minn.). The homer was Smith’s first of the year and added to the team single season record, which now stands at 15.

Imhof was on the mound for BSU. The right-hander three 5.2 innings, allowing nine runs (three earned) on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking two.

The Beavers (7-23, 4-14 NSIC) sit in an eighth-place tie with Northern State for the final spot in the NSIC Tournament. BSU have one day off before returning to the field in Mayville, N.D., to take on the Comets of Mayville State University. BSU played the Comets three times last season, winning once.
