MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team gave up a late rally to Minnesota State University Moorhead, and dropped both games of a doubleheader with the Dragons Wednesday evening at Alex Nemzek Field.
The Beavers (4-21, 2-14 NSIC) lost the first game 4-3, and found little offense in a 4-1 loss in the second game.
MSUM jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first game, but Bemidji State responded with a fifth-inning that saw the team score three runs and take a 3-2 lead.
The Dragons wiped away the lead in a hurry, scoring a game-tying run in the home half of the inning. MSUM plated the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.
Katie Prettyman (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) knocked in three runs with the bases loaded in the fifth, and Amy Klaers (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) had two of the four BSU hits.
Kristin Paine (Sr., Chisolm, Minn.) pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing three runs off eight hits to record a no-decision. Jamie Lund (Fr., Grantsburn, Wis.) gave up the game-winner and took the loss. She pitched 2.0 innings of relief duty, giving up one run and three hits.
BSU allowed four runs in the first three innings in the second game, which proved to be an insurmountable advantage. The Beavers did notch a run in the fourth inning, but it was too little too late.
Karissa Hendrickson (Fr., Big Lake, Minn.) recorded two of the four hits, and Jamie Ford (So., Edina, Minn.) had the lone run batted in scored by Klaers.
Allison Willard (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) threw the first 2.2 innings before being relieved by Lund. Willard allowed two hits, but walked five en route to allowing four runs (three earned). Lund pitched a perfect 3.1 innings, allowing only five hits and no runs.
BSU will take a day off before returning to action April 25 for its lone home series of the season. The Beavers will prepare for a two-game set with Northern State University starting at 2 p.m.
