BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team had a combined five hits in two losing efforts against Winona State University and No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday afternoon in Day 2 of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Crossover.
The Beavers dropped the first game of the day to the Warriors, 12-0, followed by a 4-0 loss to the Mustangs. In both games, BSU allowed multiple runs in the first inning without being able to respond.
Winona State scored five first inning runs, followed by six in the top of the fifth to end the game in five innings. WSU cranked out 14 hits to BSU’s three.
Mara Johnson (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) went 2-for-2 from the plate, and Brittany Bolstad (So., International Falls, Minn.) had the other hit for Bemidji State. The rest of the team combined to go 0-for-15 against the Warrior pitcher.
Kristin Paine (Sr., Chisholm, Minn.) lasted only 1.1 innings on the mound for the Beavers, giving up six runs on six hits. Allison Willard (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) came on in relief duty for the last 3.2 innings. She didn’t fare much better than Paine, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Although Bemidji State was able to hold SMSU to just seven hits, two runs in both the first and seventh innings were more than enough to put the Beavers away.
Johnson and Amy Klaers (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) both went 1-for-3 from the plate, while the remainder of the team was 0-for-18 against the Mustangs.
Jamie Lund (Fr., Grantsburn, Wis.) had a quality outing for BSU, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up just three earned runs. She allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one. Paine pitched the final 0.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs.
BSU (3-18, 2-12 NSIC) will now move on to face St. Cloud State on April 22 in St. Cloud, Minn.
