Bemidji State takes one, gives one in first NSIC doubleheader of year

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Arlington Fields) – Karissa Hendrickson (So., 3B/2B, Big Lake, Minn.) drove home two runs in the final inning to give the Bemidji State University softball team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Concordia University Saturday evening. The Golden Bears took the second game of the doubleheader 10-2 to give the two teams a split in their opening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series.

Bemidji State (6-8, 1-1 NSIC) took the early lead when Hendrickson crossed the plate in the top of the third inning. CU (17-13, 1-1 NSIC) responded with solo runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but the Beavers’ Jamie Lund (So., P, Grantsburn, Wisc.) and Courtney Loegering (Fr., OF, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) touched home on the Hendrickson double in the seventh to give the road squad the victory.

BSU was outhit 9-5, and both teams committed an error.

Courtney Anderson (Fr., P, Virginia, Minn.) pitched all 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on nine hits. She also struck out six and walked two to improve to 3-4 on the season. Stephanie Schmikla also went the distance for CU, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out three and walking one.

Hendrickson had easily the best performance at the dish, picking up three of BSU’s five hits in a 3-for-3 performance. She collected two runs batted in and scored once. Loegering and Amy Klaers (Sr., 3B/C, Elk River, Minn.) got the other hits.

Katie Anderson and Anna Bjorlin each had two hits, and Anderson scored once for Concordia. Natalie Mast and Calli Brennan each recorded an RBI, and Abby Brundidge scored the other run.

The second game wasn’t as kind to Bemidji State, as the team allowed 12 hits and got only three. The Beavers also had three errors and CU had two.

Alison Willard (Sr., P, Hutchinson, Minn.) took the mound for Bemidji State, and she struggled for 3.2 innings to drop to 2-3 on the season. She allowed nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits, while striking out and walking one. Jordan Anderson (Fr., P, Sartell, Minn.) threw the final 0.2 innings, giving up the final run.

Cassye McMahon went all 5.0 innings for Concordia, allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits. She walked five and struck out two.

The Golden Bears took the early lead, scoring two in the bottom of the third, and then poured it on with seven runs in the fourth. BSU was able to score twice in the fifth, but the game was called off after CU took the eight-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Mara Johnson (Sr., 2B, Bemidji, Minn.), Bridget Smith (Jr., SS, International Falls, Minn.) and Lund were the three Beavers to collect hits, and Smith and Hendrickson scored the two runs.

Four different Golden Bears had multiple hits, and three of them scored twice.

The Beavers will look to take down St. Cloud State University at 1:00 p.m. Sunday in a doubleheader in St. Cloud, Minn.
