BSU softball picked 12th in NSIC preseason poll

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Bemidji State softball team was picked to finish 12th in the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, receiving 49 points. Last season the Beavers finished with a record of 8-28 (3-21 NSIC) finishing 13th in the conference. Junior right fielder/pitcher Jamie Lund (Grantsburg, Wis.) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Courtney Anderson (Virginia, Minn.) were selected as the Bemidji State Preseason Players to Watch.

Winona State was picked as the preseason favorite garnering 11 first place votes and 179 total points. Rounding out the top three were Wayne State in second with 159 points (two first-place votes) and Minnesota State with 151 points (one first-place vote). University of Mary’s senior catcher/first baseman Andrea Brunskill and Winona State’s senior first baseman/designated player Kayla Lewis were tabbed as co-preseason players of the year. Wayne State’s junior pitcher Katie Goetzinger was named the preseason pitcher of the year.

Anderson pitched in 96 innings in her freshman campaign. Starting in 17 games she notched a 4-13 record while picking up one save. Her 3.50 earned run average was a team best along with her 63 strikeouts.

Lund pulled double-duty last season seeing time at both right field and in the circle pitching. Batting an average of .179, Lund tallied seven runs on 17 hits while also driving in 12 RBI. Making 13 appearances in the pitching circle she recorded an eared run average of 7.00 while striking-out 15 batters.

The softball team begins competition on Feb. 27-28 at the Husky Dome Tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. In those two days the Beavers will play four teams: Valley City State, Dakota State, St. Cloud State, and Southwest Minnesota State.
