Beavers drop doubleheader to Pittsburg State
Pittsburg, Kan. — The Bemidji State softball team dropped both games, 4-1 and 6-3, in Thursday’s doubleheader against Pittsburg State at the PSU Softball Complex.

In the first game, Pittsburg State was led by its pitcher Melissa Slayden (5-3) who retired 11 Beavers in the game and only gave up one run off of five hits. PSU gained an early lead in the first inning knocking in two runs. Bemidji State then answered back with a run of its own in the fourth inning. Kaitlin Hill (Fr., IF, Dayton, Minn.) singled to center field to lead of the inning for the Beavers. Hill later stole second before advancing to third on another BSU single. Chelsea Cardinal (Fr., P/OF, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) drove one down the right side scoring Hill to get BSU on the Board. However, Pittsburg State would end the inning only allowing the one run. PSU would then go on to score two more runs before the end of the game to win 4-1.

Bemidji State jumped out to an early three-run lead in the second game of the day. Hill singled to lead off, before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Ford (Sr., OF, Edina, Minn.). Hill then advanced to third on a wild pitch. A double by Stephanie Rossman (Fr., C/IF, Menomonee Falls, Wis.) would bring Hill across home plate. Later that inning with Rossman on third, Cardinal hit her first-collegiate home run to give the Beavers a three-run lead before closing the inning. Looking to hold their lead, the Beavers held Pittsburg State scoreless for five innings. However, a sixth inning blitz saw PSU drive in six runs, good enough to give them the win.

BSU will take part in the Pittsburg State Invitational on Friday and Saturday playing against four teams. Tomorrow the Beavers will take on Oklahoma City University at 4 p.m. before taking on Pittsburg State at 6 p.m.
