Beavers fall to Wayne State in doubleheader
Wayne, Neb. - The Bemidji State University softball team ended it’s scoreless streak against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams, scoring two runs in the second game in Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Wayne State Wildcats. However, the Beavers lost both games on the day, dropping the first one 8-0 and the second 6-2.

Starting out the game, the BSU defense did well holding the Wildcats to only two runs in the first four innings of play. Erin Emanuel (Fr., IF, Esko, Minn.) was the only Beaver to gain a hit in the first game, as Preseason of Pitcher of the Year Katie Goetzinger stuck-out 12 BSU players. In the fifth inning, the Wildcats offense broke loose, scoring six runs and ending the game 8-0.

In the first inning of the second game, Stephanie Rossman (Fr., C, Menomonee Falls, Wis.) ended the Beavers conference scoreless streak with a homer hit over the left center wall. Finishing the first inning the Beavers conceded one hit, but kept the Wildcats scoreless to maintain a 1-0 BSU lead heading into the second inning. The bats for both teams went cold as the game entered the seventh and final inning with a score of 2-1 in favor of Wayne State.

Starting off the seventh inning, Crystal Bowen (Fr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) hit a lead-off homer to tie the game at 2-2. With the game in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats made a strong offensive push to end the game. With the bases loaded, WSC’s Jennifer Radley hit a walk-off grand slam to end the game 6-2.

The Beavers return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they host Minnesota State University Moorhead at the BSU Softball Field at 3 p.m.
