Bemidji State tabbed 13th in preseason poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — The Bemidji State softball team was picked to 13th in the 2011 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, receiving 38 points. Last season the Beavers finished with a record of 6-39 (2-24 NSIC) finishing 14th in the conference. Junior right-handed pitcher Courtney Anderson (Virginia, Minn.) and sophomore utility player Chelsea Cardinal (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) were selected as the Bemidji State Preseason Players to Watch.

Wayne State was picked as the preseason favorite garnering 177 points and 9 first place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team). Defending regular season champions, Augustana, was second in the poll with 16 points and two first place votes. Winona State was third with 163 points and three first place vote, while Minnesota State was fourth with 147 points.

Anderson saw the most time in the circle of all the BSU pitchers last season, pitching in 145.1 innings. In her sophomore campaign she totaled 123 strikeouts, sixth most in the NSIC, and recorded a 4.62 ERA.

Cardinal saw various playing time all over the field, helping play right field, pitching and as the designated player. Cardinal batted a .245 average on the season gaining 25 hits, including eight doubles and one homer. In the circle Cardinal pitched 25.2 innings striking out 13 batters while recording a 8..45 ERA.

The softball team begins competition on March 5-7, when the Beavers travel to Farmington, Mo. to take on Mineral Area Community College, Jefferson County Community College and McKendree University.
