Softball opens season with split against Jefferson County
FARMIGNTON, Mo. — The Bemidji State University softball team opened the 2011 season splitting a doubleheader against Jefferson County Community College on Saturday. The Beavers dropped the first game 9-6, then bounced back winning the second game 1-0.

The first game saw Jefferson County CC jump on top after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bemidji State’s rebuttal in the top of the second inning fell short as the Beavers could only muster two runs to cut their deficit to one. The two sides would continue to exchange runs until the bottom of the fourth. With the Beavers behind 4-3, Jefferson County scored three to take a break-away 7-3 lead. Bemidji State would eventually fall 9-6 in seven innings, after collecting seven hits and committing three errors. In her first collegiate game, Nicole Dupay (Fr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) went 3-3 at the plate and scored three runs for the Beavers. Junior college transfer Ashly Erickson (Jr., UT, Little Falls, Minn.) hit a home run on the first pitch she saw in the game. Kelsey Saralampi (So., RHP, Esko, Minn.) pitched all seven innings for BSU and tallied one strikeout.

In the second game the Beavers were led by strong pitching from Courtney Anderson (Jr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) who tallied eight strikeouts in five innings. Only five innings were played due to lack day light. Posting a 1-0 victory, the Beavers collected five hits while committing no errors. Along with the eight strikeouts, Anderson only conceded three hits and one walk. The lone run for the Beavers was scored by Courtney Loegering (Jr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) in the top of the fifth inning. Loegering singled, but advanced to second base on the play. A bunt by Megan Bergeson (Fr., UT,     New London-Spicer, Minn.) moved Loegering to third, before she finally came home off a wild pitch. Kayla Babinski (So., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) went 2-2 at the plate, hitting one double.

The Beavers were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Mineral Area Community College on Sunday starting at noon, but due to inclement  weather the Beavers will now play one game at 9 a.m. against Mineral Area CC.
