BSU splits with McKendree University

LEBANON, Ill. - The Bemidji State University softball team split Monday's doubleheader with McKendree University shutting out the Bearcats 1-0 in the first game before dropping the second 4-0.

The first game of the series was all about pitching as junior right-hander Courtney Anderson (Virginia, Minn.) pitched a complete game, recording a career high 14 strikeouts. Anderson started the game off by strking out the first three Bearcat batters. However, the game would prove to be a defensive battle as neither team was able to record a run in seven innings and two additional innings were needed.

In the top of the ninth, Nicole Dupay (Fr., OF. Woodbury, Minn.) singled to lead off. Brittany DeBoer (Jr., UT, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) then entered the game to pinch rau for Dupay. Kayla Babinski (So., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) was up next for the Beavers and hit a home run to score DeBoer. However, Babinski failed to touch home plate and was recorded out. Luckily for Bemidji State, DeBoer’s run would prove to be enough to hold on as Anderson struck out the final batter to end the game. Bemidji State had four hits in the game while committing one error.

The second game saw McKendree University muster a better effort and the Bearcats returned the favor, shutting out Bemidji State 4-0. The Beavers didn’t have trouble at the plate, getting six hits in the game, but had trouble finishing as there were a total of seven BSU players left on base during the course of the game. Kelsey Saralampi (So., LHP, Esko, Minn.) pitched the game for BSU, recording three strikeouts, but gave up four earned runs off five hits. Courtney Loegering (Jr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) went 2-3 (.667) at the plate.

The Beavers are now 4-2 to start the season and will be in St. Charles, Mo. on Wednesday continuing their spring break trip as they take on Lindenwood University. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon.
