Anderson and McLeod garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Courtney Anderson (Jr., P, 6-0, Virginia, Minn.) and Aaron McLeod (So., F, 5-9, Ottawa, Ontario) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Feb. 28-March 6.

Anderson, a right-handed pitcher on the BSU softball team, picked up two wins to help the Beavers down Jefferson County Community College 1-0 and Mineral Area Community College 7-2 March 5-6, respectively. Anderson conceded just three hits, while tallying eight strikeouts in five innings against Jefferson County Saturday. Versus Mineral Area the following day, she pitched a complete game allowing just two runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters.

For the weekend, Anderson pitched 12 innings, collected 15 strikeouts, allowed two runs on seven hits and walked one.

The two wins helped the Beavers open the season with a 3-1 record, already half as many wins from the entire 2010 season.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the fourth of Anderson’s career, while she stands as the first member of the 2011 BSU softball team to be selected for the honor.  She also earned Beaver Pride recognition April 1, 2009 as a freshman and March 31 and April 21 of last season.

McLeod scored a pair of goals March 4-5 to lead the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team in its final series of the 2010-11 regular season.  McLeod’s goals came in back-to-back nights versus University of Minnesota, marking the first time he’s scored in consecutive games. Friday, the sophomore gave the Beavers their first lead of the night midway through the first period with his fourth goal of the season.  Saturday, McLeod put BSU in front 2-0 midway through the second with the first unassisted goal of his collegiate career.

With a career-best 5-3=8 points on the season, he finished the weekend with a +2 plus/minus rating, registered six shots on goal and blocked three shots.

This stands as the first Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award for McLeod, while he is the sixth student-athlete from the 2010-11 men’s hockey team to be honored by the organization this season.  He follows Jordan George (Nov. 10), Matt Read (Nov. 17), Dan Bakala (Dec. 8 and Feb. 9) and Sam Rendle (Jan. 6).

The BSU men’s hockey team is in action again this weekend as they open the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) playoffs with a best-of-three series at University of Nebraska at Omaha.  The series will begin Friday at 7:37 p.m. with the second game set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday and a third game, if necessary, slated for Sunday at 7:07 p.m.  All three games will take place at Quest Center Omaha.

Anderson and the BSU softball team are in the midst of their spring trip.  The team has a pair of games versus Lindenwood today at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and will wrap up the 10-game trip through Missouri and Illinois Saturday with a doubleheader at St. Charles Community College.  The games are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
