Beavers drop three on final day of Husky Dome Tourney
ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team dropped three games Saturday afternoon at the Husky Dome Tournament, losing to the University of Mary 6-5, St. Cloud State 9-3 and Concordia-St. Paul 5-0.

In the first game of the day against the U-Mary Marauders, the Beavers tried rallying back from a 6-2 deficit in the final inning, but fell short of one run to tie the game. University of Mary took the lead scoring one run in the first inning, but Bemidji State responded in the fourth scoring Chelsea Cardinal (So., UT, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) to tie the game at 1-1. Even with home run by Megan Beard (Jr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) in the sixth inning, the Beavers found themselves needing down by four heading into the final frame.

In the seventh inning, Ashly Erickson (Jr., UT, Little Falls, Minn.) singled to start a rally for the Beavers. Danika Stelton (So., OF, International Falls, Minn.) would hit a double to score Courtney Loegering (Jr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) to make the score 6-3. Later Nicole Dupay (Fr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) would score Megan Bergeson (Fr., OF, New London-Spicer, Minn.) before Kayla Babinski (So., IF, Devils Lake, Minn.) would hit a sacrafice fly to right field to score Stelton. With a tie game within one run, the Beavers had one runner on second, however, the Marauders would end the BSU rally and claim  the 6-5 victory.

Courtney Anderson (Jr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) pitched the six innings for the Beavers, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out seven batters. Beard led the Beavers at bat going 2-2 (1.00) in the game, hitting her first collegiate home run, also the first for team on the season.

In the second game of the day the Beavers faced a strong St. Cloud State team on its home turf. The Huskies would start the game putting up five runs in the first two innings. Kayla Minarich (So., OF, Crosby, Minn.), Loegering, and Stelton would score the three runs for the Beavers in the game. Loegering went a perfect 2-2 at bat in the game also picking up an RBI in the sixth inning. The Huskies scored a total of nine runs off 12 hits to claim the win. Kelsey Saralampi (So., LHP, Esko, Minn.) recorded four strike outs in her third appearance on the season for BSU.

Concordia-St. Paul stymied the Beavers in the third and final game of the day, as BSU could only muster one hit off the pitching of the Golden Bears’ Cassye McMahon. Bemidji State dropped the game with a 5-0 final score. Erickson recorded the lone hit for the Beavers, going 1-2 (.500) in the contest. Anderson was in the circle again for BSU, picking up six more strikeouts and only giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

The Beavers are now 1-7 on the season. They will open conference action next weekend on April 2, when they travel to Marshall, Minn. to take on Southwest Minnesota State in a doubleheader slated to start at noon.
