Augie sweeps BSU in doubleheader
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team opened its home season with two losses, 7-1 and 2-1, to Augustana College on Saturday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field.

The first game saw Augustana roll offensively, as the Vikings drove in five runs in the fifth inning. Augie would score a total of seven runs on 14 hits. The Vikings turned two double plays in the game, while the Beavers had one. Bemidji State’s Hayley Williams (Jr., OF, Crete, Ill.) went 2-3 (.667) in the game.

In the second game, Bemidji State pull together defensively and only conceded four hits to the Vikings. However, the BSU batting also struggled as the Beavers only recorded two hits. After Augie took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, the Beavers responded in the bottom of the sixth with a run to tie the game. Megan Bergeson (Fr., UT, New London-Spicer, Minn.) reached on a error and Kayla Minarich (So., OF, Crosby, Minn.) went in to pinch run for Bergeson. Minarich reached second after a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Dupay (Fr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) Williams then reached on a fielder’s choice, but an errant throw by the Vikings allowed Minarich to score.

With the game tied at 1-1 the Vikings then put up one final run in the top of the seventh to seal the sweep over the Beavers. Courtney Anderson (Jr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) pitched the game for the Beavers recording nine strikeouts.

The Beavers will play the Wayne State Wildcats tomorrow at the BSU Softball Field in another conference doubleheader slated to begin at 10 a.m.
