Bemidji State picked 13th in preseason softball poll
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -  The Bemidji State University softball team was picked to finish 13th in the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Softball Coaches’ poll released Thursday afternoon. Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devil’s Lake, N.D.) and Courtney Anderson (Sr., P, Virginia, Minn.) were picked as BSU’s 2012 NSIC Players to Watch.

Returning NSIC Champion Augustana College was picked to finish first in the conference with 162 points and eight first-place votes. Minnesota State University, Mankato was slotted second with four first-place votes and received 152 points. Winona State University and University of Minnesota, Duluth each received one first-place vote and were picked third and fourth respecitvely. Bemidji State received 24 points in the poll.

The Beavers are in their first season under head coach Rick Supinski, who takes over the reins of program after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Supinski, a native of Little Canada, Minn., takes over a program that finished 5-27 (4-20 NSIC) in one season under Shane Gunderson.

The Beavers return both of their top pitchers from 2011. Anderson led the team with a 4.11 earned runs average in 111.2 innings pitched. Anderson was 3-14 on the season while striking out a team-high 124 batters. Also returning to the fold is Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., P, Esko, Minn.), who was 2-13 with a 8.30 ERA in 90 innings pitched.

BSU also returns its three top bats from the 2011 campaign. Babinski led the team with a .298 batting average and 11 runs batted in. Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) also returns after a successful first season in which she batted .280 and had eight RBI in addition to leading the team in stolen bases with six. Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) returns for her senior season after hitting .250 and leading the team with 10 runs scored. Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.), Megan Bergeson (So., UT, New London-Spicer, Minn.) and Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.), all who started over 25 games last season, also return in the field.

Bemidji State will open play Feb. 28 with nonconference games against conference foes University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State University, Mankato in Vadnais Heights, Minn. The Beavers will also play Feb. 29 with a pair of games versus University of Minnesota, Crookston.
