BSU picks up sweep of Minnesota, Crookston Wednesday
VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team picked up a sweep of University of Minnesota, Crookston Wednesday afternoon at the Vadnais Sports Center in Vadnais Heights, Minn. Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) and Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) combined to pitch seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory in game one. In game two, the Beavers bats ignited as they scored eight runs on 10 hits to pick up an 8-4 win over the Golden Eagles. BSU is now 2-2 in Rick Supinski’s first season at the healm of the Beaver program.

Bemidji State opened up game one with a run in the first inning as freshman Summer Monsrud (OF, Bemidji, Minn.) scored to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead. Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) singled moving Monsrud over to second. The freshman then stole third base and found her way home on a Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) fielder’s choice.

BSU went ahead 2-0 in the third inning as Monsrud again scored as she found her way home on a passed ball by the Golden Eagle pitcher.

In the fifth inning, Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., P, Esko, Minn.) got on base with a pinch-hit single to lead off the inning. Minnesota, Crookston would then load the bases with Beavers as Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF,  Blaine, Minn.) was hit by a pitch and Monsrud got on with a bunt single. Saralampi scored on a Dupay fielder’s choice.

Anderson pitched five innings and gets the win after giving up two hits, a walk and striking out three batters. Roberts relieved Anderson in the sixth inning and shut down the six batters she faced in order.

BSU was led in the game by Monsrud who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Dupay was 1-for-3 with one RBI.

In game two, the Beavers again got off to a quick start. Monsrud walked to get on base and then stole second. She then moved to third on Loegering’s fly ball to center field. The BSU freshman outfielder scored on a Dupay sacrifice ground out to put the Beavers ahead 1-0.

Bemidji State took a 2-0 lead in the third as Loegering blasted the first home run of the season for the Beavers and the second of her career.

BSU exploded for six more runs in the fifth inning as Monsrud, Loegering, Dupay, Beard, Babinski and Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) all scored. The Beavers had six hits in the inning and sent 11 batters to the plate.

Monsrud led the Beavers in game two as well as she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. She finished the day 5-for-6 with four runs. Loegering was 2-for-4 on the game with a home run and two runs scored. Babinski was 3-for-4 on the game with one run scored.

Roberts got the start in game two, pitching five innings while allowing two runs on five hits. Cassie MacArthur (Fr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) came in to relieve Roberts in the sixth innings. MacArthur gave up two runs on two hits and walked one batter.

The Beavers will return to action next week as they head to Clermont, Fla. for their spring break trip. BSU will play 12 games from March 4-9 starting with games against Hannibal LaGrange University and Simmons College March 4 and wrapping up with a doubleheader against Wilmington University March 9.
