Beavers drop final four games of Florida road trip
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bemidji State University softball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Clermont, Fla. with four losses to end the 11-game tournament with a 4-7 mark. The Beavers fell 11-2 in five innings to University of Saint Francis out of Joliet, Ill. in game one Thursday night. In game two, the Beavers were dropped 4-0 to Urbana University out of Urbana, Ohio. BSU ended the trip as Wilmington University out of Delaware swept Bemidji State Friday in a doubleheader; 5-2, 5-3. Bemidji State is now 6-9 on the season.

Against St. Francis the Beavers gave up 15 hits to the Fightin Saints and scored two runs, one of the earned against St. Francis pitched Becka Anderson. Bemidji State was held to five hits in the game, three of them didn’t come until the fifth inning. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the Fighting Saints having a lead of more than eight runs (11-2).

In game two of Thursday night against Urbana, the Beavers fell in a 4-0 shutout.

In game one of the doubleheader against Wilmington on Friday the Beavers had five hits against Wildcat pitcher Katie Warrington. Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) paced BSU going 2-of-3 with one run scored. The first game was scoreless until the third inning when Wilmingon plated one run. Bemidji State took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. The scoring rally started as Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devil’s Lake, N.D.) reached on an error on the pitcher. Babinski moved to second on a Bowen single. Babinski moved to third on a fielder’s choice by Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.). Babinski scored on a Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) groundout. Bowen scored to put BSU ahead 2-1 after a Kelly Richards (Fr., C, Virginia, Minn.) single.

The Wildcats rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored four runs to go ahead 5-2, a lead they would hold on to.

Freshman Allison Roberts (RHP, Crystal, Minn.) got the start for Bemidji State. Roberts allowed only one run in the first four innings but was bounced after allowing four runs, three of them earned to open the fifth inning. Roberts was relieved by Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., RHP, Esko, Minn.) who went the final 1.2 innings pitched retirng all five batters she faced.

In game two of the doubleheader against Wilmington, the Wildcats got on the board early as they scored two runs in the top of the first inning off of BSU pitcher Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.). The Beavers knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning. Babinski led off the inning with a single. She moved to second on a Bowen fielder’s choice. Babinski scored as Richards got on base on an error by the short stop. Richards scored the second run as freshman Cassie MacArthur (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) tripled.

The game would remain knotted at 2-2 until the top of the seventh inning when the Wildcats scored three runs to chase Anderson from the game. The Beavers tried to respond in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, MacArthur doubled. She moved to third base on a Katelyn Fondurulia (Jr., C/OF, Blaine, Minn.) groundout. MacArthur scored on a Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn. ) single. The Beavers came up two runs short as the Wildcat pitcher got the final out of the game on the next batter.

Anderson went 6.2 innings giving up nine hits, five earned runs and striking out eight Wilmington batters. She was releived by Saralampi who pitched a third of the inning. The Beaver bats were led on the game by MacArthur, who went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Monsrud went 2-for-4 on the contest.

Bemidji State has already surpassed its win total from the 2011 season as they went 5-27 last season. The Beavers will next play March 24 as they host Southwest Minnesota State University in a conference doubleheader. BSU will then play two more home doubleheaders against Minnesota State University, Mankato March 25 and University of Minnesota, Crookston March 28.
