Anderson and Walters garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University student-athletes Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) and Mason Walters (Jr., F, Milton, Wis.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of March 5-11.
Anderson posted a 3.10 earned run average in 29.1 innings pitched while appearing in six games during the BSU softball team’s spring trip to Clermont, Fla. March 4-9. Anderson’s week was highlighted by a no-hitter against Saint Vincent College March 7. The senior form Virginia, Minn. had 17 strikeouts in seven innings and was one fifth-inning play away from a perfect game. Anderson had 41 strikeouts on the week. Against West Virginia Wesleyan, who is receiving votes in the national polls, she gave up only four hits in six innings while surrendering four earned runs. She came in relief against No. 24 Grand Valley State and pitched two scoreless innings with four hits and three strikeouts.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the second of the season for Anderson and the BSU softball team. Anderson has previously been selected for the award five other times throughout her career.

Walters came off the bench and scored nine first half points to guide the Beavers to a halftime lead versus St. Cloud State University in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Central Region Men’s Basketball Tournament March 10. The junior finished the game with 15 points – his third largest scoring output of the season – and a team-high six rebounds in 31 minutes. He broke out of a late-season shooting slump and shot 50 percent (5-for-10) from the field and from beyond the arc (3-for-6). Walters added two assists and a steal and did not commit a turnover.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is the first of Walters’ career and 10th for the BSU men’s basketball team. Walters follows seven-time recipient James Ellisor (Sr., F, Glendale, Ariz.) (Nov. 23, Nov. 30, Jan. 4, Jan. 11, Jan. 25, Feb. 22 and Feb. 29), Bryce Tesdahl (Sr., G, Crosby, Minn.), who was the Jan. 18 selection, and Feb. 28 selection Dermaine Crockrell (Jr., G, Mesa, Ariz.).

The BSU softball team, which completed its spring trip 4-8, is 6-9 overall, returns to action March 24-25 when it opens Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play hosting Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University.  The Beavers open the weekend with a doubleheader versus SMSU beginning at 2 p.m. March 24 and will face MSU March 25 beginning 12 p.m. Both games are set for BSU Softball Field.

The Bemidji State men’s basketball team made its second appearance in the NCAA tournament in program history March 10 as it closed the 2011-12 season at the NCAA Tournament with a 77-72 loss to NSIC-foe St. Cloud State in Golden, Colo. on the campus of Colorado School of Mines. The Beavers finished the season with a record-breaking number of wins and an overall record of 22-9. BSU will lose three seniors to graduation, including Ellisor, the NSIC and Central Region Player of the Year, and First Team All-NSIC second team all-region pick Tesdahl. BSU will have four seniors and three juniors returning for the 2012-13 campaign. Head coach Matt Bowen (NSIC Coach of the Year) completed his sixth season at Bemidji State in 2011-12 and owns a career mark of 64-102 (.386).
