BSU set for mid-week tilts against Vikings and Golden Eagles

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State softball team is set for doubleheaders against nonconference foe Valley City State University Tues., March 27 at 2 and 4 p.m. and versus Northern Sun Intercollegiate Sun foe Univeristy of Minnesota, Crookston Wed., March 28 at 1 and 3 p.m. The Beavers enter the games with a 6-13 (0-4 NSIC) mark after dropping four at home against Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato over the weekend.

The Beavers were led on the weekend by Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.), who hit .455 (5-fo-11) on the weekend with three singles, a double and a run scored. In the circle, Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) comes into the games as the team’s clubhouse leader boasting a 3-5 record with a 2.58 earned run average in 59.2 innings pitched while striking out 66 batters. The Beavers have also had strong starts to the careers for newcomers Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) and Cassie MacArthur (Fr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.). Monsrud leads the team with a .327 average with nine runs scored and six stolen bases. MacArthur is hitting at a .281 clip on the year.

Scouting Valley City State

The Vikings enter Tuesday’s games with a 9-6 overall mark on the season. They are coming off a sweep of Concordia College, Moorhead over the weekend. Valley City State is paced at the plate by third baseman Jane Pettit, who is hitting .500 in 42 at bats with 13 runs scored and 14 runs batted in. In addition, short stop Adrianna Boychuk has been off to a strong start for the Vikings hitting .415 with 10 runs scored.

In the circle, Valley City State is led by the arm of Katie McBride, who is 4-4 with a 1.91 ERA in 11 appearances. Jennifer Shadlock has also been strong for the Vikings with a 5-2 mark and 2.33 ERA in seven appearances.

Scouting Minnesota, Crookston

The Beavers and Golden Eagles played in nonconference games earlier this season with BSU winning both contests (3-0, 8-4) in late February in Vadnais Heights, Minn. Minnesota, Crookston comes into Wednesday with a 7-14 (1-3 NSIC) mark. The Golden Eagles are
 led at the plate by Paige Schaust, who is hitting .423 in 52 at bats with 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Courtney Bridge is also off to a strong start batting at a .400 clip with 14 runs scored and eight RBI.

Paige Marcum is the workhorse of the Golden Eagle pitching staff, going 62 innings this year with a 3-9 record and a 5.95 earned runs average. In addition, Schaust has started a lot in the circle with a 3-2 mark and a 4.78 ERA in 33.2 innings pitched.
