Bemidji State picks up split with Valley City State

BEMIDJI, Minn. -The Bemidji State University softball team picked up a split with Valley City State University Tuesday at the BSU Softball Field. The Beavers are now 7-14 on the season after winnig 2-0 in game one over the Vikings and falling 6-2 in game two. Valley City State’s record now stands at 10-7 on the season. Courtney Anderson’s (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) two-hitter guided the Beavers in the game one win.

The Beaver bats got the Beavers off to a 1-0 lead over the Vikings in the top of the first inning. Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) led off the game with a bunt single. The newcomer was plated by a Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) single to center field.

Bemidji State added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cassie MacArthur (Fr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) led off the inning with a bunt single. MacArthur scored as Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) reached on an error by the right fielder.

Anderson got the start in game one of the doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. Anderson went a full seven innings, giving up only two hits on the game. She struck out four batters in the game. Anderson improved to 4-5 on the season.

Monsrud led the Beavers going 2-for-3 with one run scored. MacArthur, Beard and senior Courtney Loegering (OF, Blaine, Minn.) also got hits in the game.

Katie McBride got the loss for Valley City State, going six innings while giving up five hits.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Vikings got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Jen Shadlock singled and scored on a Hilary Kulczewski single off of BSU starter Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.)

The Beavers knotted up the score at 1-1 after Monsrud scored when Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) reached on an error by the third baseman. Bemidji State had three runners they left on base in the inning as Dupay reached on an error by the short stop and Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) singled.

Valley City State got out to a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Shadlock opened the frame with a double to center field. She was advanced on a bunt single by Jane Pettit. Both runs were plated on a single by Kulczewski to center field.

The Beavers looked to answer in the bottom of the inning after Beard singled down the right field line and Bowen singled down the left field line. However, Dupay and Babinski both hit ground balls in the infield leading to two outs to squash BSU’s chances at getting runs.

Bemidji State was able to get within one run of the Vikings in the bottom of the fourth inning after Saralampi, who walked, scored on a
Monsrud groundout.

The game remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh inning when Valley City State added security to its lead with three runs. Shadlock,
Stephanie Lahey and Adrianna Boychik all scored runs in the frame. Saralampi was pulled in the inning for freshman Allison Roberts (RHP, Crystal, Minn.), who got the final out.

The Beavers looked to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh after Loegering singled and Bowen reached on an error by the left fielder, however a fielder’s choice by Dupay and a groundout by Babinski ended BSU’s attempt at a rally and thus concluded the game.

Saralampi suffered the loss for BSU after going 6.2 innings and giving up six earned runs on 11 hits. Three of the earned runs came in the seventh inning after she pitched strong for six innings.

Shadlock picked up the win for the Vikings, going seven innings and giving up one earned run on seven hits.

The Bemidji State bats were led by seven different players who each had a hit. Both Monsrud and Bowen had an RBI, while Monsrud and Saralampi scored the runs for the Beavers in game two.

BSU will play two more tomorrow as they host University of Minnesota, Crookston a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the BSU Softball Field. The two teams met earlier this season with the Beavers winning both.
