BSU treks to No. 23 Augustana and Wayne State for NSIC contests

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team will hit the road for NSIC doubleheaders against No. 23 Augustana College and Wayne State College (Neb.) this weekend. The Beavers open up the road stand Sat., March 31 at 12 p.m. against Augustana, with the second game slated for 2 p.m. They will continue the trip Sun., April 1 at 12 p.m. versus Wayne State, with the second contest set for a 2 p.m. start. The Beavers enter the weekend with a 7-16 (0-6 NSIC) mark.

Bemidji State’s bats are led by Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.), who is hitting .500 (9-of-18) over the last four series and has boosted her overall average to .321 on the season. Along with Bowen, freshman Summer Monsrud (OF, Bemidji, Minn.) has found her way on the base paths as she is hitting .358 and leads the team with 12 runs scored on the season.

The Beaver pitching staff is led by Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.), who boasts a 2.31 earned runs average in 72.2 innings pitched this year with 76 strikeouts. Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) has also seen a lot of action in the circle this season and is 1-4 with a 5.41 ERA.

Bemidji State already has more wins than they did last season with seven wins so far in the 2012 campaign. However, BSU is still seeking a conference victory as it heads into its fourth and fifth conference match-ups this weekend.

Scouting Augustana
The Vikings enter the weekend ranked No. 23 in the nation and are currently 27-4 (5-1 NSIC) on the season. Augustana picked up a pair of mid-week sweeps over Southwest Minnesota State University and University of Sioux Falls. The Vikings are led at the plate by Matley Jones, who is hitting .510 with 23 runs batted in. Augustana also has Chelsi Winskowski, a junior outfielder who is hitting .427 and leads the squad with 24 runs scored.

In the circle, the Vikings are led by Ashley Meyer. The senior has a 12-2 record with a 1.29 ERA. In addition to Meyer, Augustana also has Jenelle Trautman, who is  12-2 with a 1.62 ERA.

Scouting Wayne State
The Wildcats are 15-13 (1-5 NSIC) as they enter Sunday’s action against Bemidji State. Wayne State will play University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. The Wildcat bats are paced by Dani Sandel’s .414 batting average with 21 runs scored and 15 RBI. Vicki Nielsen is also off to a strong start for Wayne State as she boasts a .356 average with 19 RBI and 18 runs scored.

The Wildcat pitching staff is led by Sara Scheffert’s 2.38 ERA in 82.1 innings pitched. Jordan Harris has also appeared a lot for Wayne State, and has a 3.18 ERA in 50.2 innings this year.
