BSU falls in doubleheader to No. 23 Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Bemidji State University softball team fell 4-1 and 9-1 Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses in a doubleheader against No. 23 Augustana College at Bowden Field. The Beavers fall to 7-18 (0-8 NSIC) on the season. The Vikings improve to 29-4 (7-1 NSIC) on the year.

BSU pitcher Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) got the start in the circle in game one. Anderson shut down the Vikings in the first two innings giving up only two hits. Augustana finally got to the BSU pitcher in the bottom of the third inning as Theresa McMahon doubled to lead off the inning. McMahon scored as Elizabeth Murray reached on a fielder’s choice. In the next at bat, Augustana put up two more runs as Jenelle Trautmann hit her 10th dinger of the year.

Down 3-0, the Beavers looked to rally in the top of the sixth inning as Augustana made a pitching change pulling Ashley Meyer and inserting Chelsey Durland. Junior designated player Hannah Benzie (OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) singled to start off the inning. In the next at bat, Megan Bergeson (So., C/IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.) hit a ground ball to short stop that was misplayed by Brittany Coufal allowing Bergeson to reach and Benzie to be safe at second base. Cassie MacArthur (Fr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) hit a single through the left side to score Benzie. With only one out BSU looked to be in good shape but Durland struck out Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) and Megan Beard (Jr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) lined out to Durland to get the Vikings out of the inning.

Augustana added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lindsay Spanton led off the inning with a double to right center. A Kelsey Kalman single scored Elissa Reinsma, who pinch ran for Spanton.

The Beavers had one more chance to answer the Vikings in the top of the seventh inning but Durland took down three Bemidji State batters in order to secure a win for Augustana.

Anderson went six innings for the Beavers and gave up eight hits and four earned runs. Meyer gave up only one hit in five innings for Augustana before Durland came on to pitch the final two innings.

BSU was led by a trio of players with a hit apiece. Benzie went 1-for-2 while Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) and MacArthur also had a hit.

In game two of the doubleheader the Vikings struck early to score three in the bottom of the first inning. Trautmann doubled off BSU starter Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) to score Jenny Brown and Murray. Trautmann scored on a Spanton fly out to center field.

Bemidji State responded with a run of its own in the top of the second inning. Beard led off the frame with a single. She scored on a ground out by Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) to second base.

Augustana added two runs in the bottom of the second to get out to a 5-1 lead after McMahon hit a two-run homer.

The two teams played scoreless softball for the next two innings until the Vikings had a four-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning. Murray hit a solo-shot to lead off the inning for Augustana. Kalkman singled to score two more runs for the Vikings. Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) came in to replace Saralampi after she gave up three runs to start the inning. Roberts gave up a single to Matley Jones which scored Reinsma, who pinch ran for Kalkman. The game was called after the inning due to the eight-run mercy rule after five.

Saralampi went four innings for BSU giving up nine hits and had eight earned runs credited to her. Trautmann got the win for Augustana pitching five innings and giving up three hits and one run.

BSU was led by one hit apiece by three batters as Beard, Loegering and Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) all reached base.
