Beavers fall in conference doubleheader to Wayne State
Sunday, April 1, 2012

WAYNE, Neb. - Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) pitched a two-hit shutout through five innings in game two of a doubleheader but the Bemidji State University softball team fell 2-0 to Wayne State College (Neb.). The Beavers fell 6-1 in a contest earlier in the day against the Wildcats. BSU falls to 7-20 on the year and remain winless in the NSIC (0-10). Wayne State improves to 17-15 (3-7 NSIC).

In game one of the day Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) got the start for the Beavers and went 6.2 innings. Saralampi gave up only three earned runs on seven hits through five innings before a series of errors in the field allowed three unearned runs to widen the gap to 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Wildcats led off the game with a run in the bottom of the first when Aeriell Earlywine scored on a Kaiti Williams single to center field.

Wayne State added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Jordan King’s single to center field plated Kassi Nurton and Sara Scheffert.

Saralampi allowed only two runners to reach base over the next two innings to keep the Beavers in the game. BSU finally found support for its pitcher in the top of the sixth inning when Scheffert walked Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) with the bases loaded allowing Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) to score. With the bases loaded and no out Wayne State changed pitchers and inserted Jordan Harris who got the Wildcats out of the innings after only allowing one run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wayne State added three runs as Saralampi gave up three hits and two Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) errors at short stop allowed runners to reach.

Beard led the BSU bats in the game as she was 3-for-3 in the opening game.

In game two, the story of the contest was a pitcher’s duo between Anderson and Kelcie Bormann. Through the first two innings neither pitcher allowed a hit with the only base runners being from a walk and an error by Megan Bergeson (So., C/IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.) at third base. Williams finally got the first hit of the game for the Wildcats off Anderson in the bottom of the third. However, both pitchers kept a clean slate heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wayne State finally found the runs it needed as Vicki Nielsen singled with one out. Nielsen’s single was followed up by a two-run dinger by Bormann. Megan Hagemann followed up the home run with a double of her own but Anderson was able to get out of the inning after securing the final two outs.

BSU had one last chance to respond to Wayne State’s two runs in the top of the seventh inning. However, Bormann took the BSU lineup down in order to secure a 2-0 win for the Wildcats.

Anderson went six innings for the Beavers giving up two runs on five hits. Bormann went a full seven innings for the Wildcats and only gave up two hits. Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) and Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) had the two hits for the Beavers.

BSU will look to get on a winning track as they host Minnesota State University, Moorhead in a mid-week doubleheader Tues., April 3 beginning at 2 p.m. at the BSU Softball Field. Bemidji State fell in a close one with the Dragons earlier this season 3-1 in Vadnais Heights, Minn.
