BSU set for pair of doubleheaders against UMD Thursday and Friday

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team will host University of Minnesota Duluth in a pair of doubleheaders Thurs., April 5 and Fri., April 6 at the BSU Softball Field. Thursday’s games will serve as nonconference games and will start at 2 and 4 p.m. and Friday’s contests will commence at 12 and 2 p.m. and will count as Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. Thursday’s doubleheader was moved up from Saturday due to expected inclimate weather in Bemidji on Saturday. Friday’s games were moved up from an original start of 1 and 3 p.m. for the same reason.

BSU enters the games with a 8-21 (1-11 NSIC) record after picking up a split with Minnesota State University, Moorhead Tuesday afternoon in Bemidji. The 6-1 win in game one of the series was the first conference win for BSU this season and the first victory in the NSIC for first-year head coach Rick Supinski, who arrived from Bates College this Winter.

The Beavers’ pitching staff is led by Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.), who pitched 13 innings in two games against the Dragons Tuesday, only allowing one run. Anderson’s 2.22 earned run average currently ranks eighth among NSIC pitchers. She also ranks fourth in the conference for strikeouts with 91 so far this season. The senior has 401 career strikeouts, which ranks second all-time behind Andrea Block at BSU. Her 91 in a season is just 33 shy of her career best 124 fanned batters during the 2011 season.

Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) is also coming off a strong performance Tuesday in the circle. Saralampi went six innings in relief giving up just five hits and one earned run. Saralampi has a 5.40 earned runs average in 58.1 innings pitched this season.

At the plate, BSU has gotten a strong contribution from junior Hannah Benzie (OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) who is hitting .375 in her last 16 plate appearances with two runs scored and three RBI. Cassie MacArthur (Fr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) had the pivotal hit in the 6-1 win over the Dragons Tuesday with a bases clearing double down the left field line to plate three runs. MacArthur is hitting .255 on the season.
