Anderson's two-hit shutout and Beard's bat guide BSU to split with UMD

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team used a two-hit shutout from Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) and a clutch two-out base hit from Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) to drive in the game-winning run to defeat University of Minnesota Duluth 1-0 in game one of a doubleheader. The UMD bats were too much for the Beavers in game two as the Bulldogs picked up a 10-0 victory. The win in game one is the first victory for BSU over a UMD team since defeating Bulldogs 1-0 in 1999. It is  the fourth win over UMD in the program’s 31 year history with the other two wins coming in 1991 and 1996. The Beavers are 9-24 (2-12 NSIC) after the split. UMD is now 27-17 (9-5 NSIC).

Anderson’s pitches were clicking from the get go in the first game of the doubleheader as UMD struggled to get to the senior from the Iron Range of Northeast Minnesota. Anderson would allow only three runners to reach base all game for the Bulldogs. Tarah Kerr singled to lead off the game, Carlie Schnobelen reached in the third on an error by Beard at short stop and Whitney Strantz singled in the fifth frame. Anderson finished the game with 10 strikeouts to earn her third shutout of the season.

BSU was the aggressor from the plate in game one as the Beavers were able to get to Mullen, who was holding opposing batters to a .209 average, third-best in the NSIC, prior to Friday’s games. Bemidji State’s first chance at runs came in the second inning as Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) reached on an error by the short stop and Cassie MacArthur (Fr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) singled to left field. With two on and two out, Anderson came to the plate with a chance to give herself some run support. Anderson struck out swinging to keep the score knotted 0-0.

The Beavers had their second chance at runs in the third. Nicole Dupay (Jr., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) singled to right field with one out. She then advanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, Beard singled up the middle and Dupay rounded the bases and attempted to score but was caught by a throw from Michaela Goris in center field.

BSU had a third chance to find a run in the fourth. MacArthur walked and then Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) singled to right field. Anderson again found herself up at the plate but grounded out to second base.

The Beavers finally found the much-needed run in the fifth inning as Beard laced one to right field to plate Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) who had reached on a single up the middle.

Beard and Benzie led the Beavers in game one as both players were 2-for-3 while Beard had the game-winning RBI.

The second game was a different story as the Bulldogs were able to get to the BSU pitching staff early after struggling in game one. Anderson got the start in the circle for the second game after a stellar first-game performance. UMD had three hits in the inning and scored a run as a Erin Hunecke single scored Goris.

UMD added two runs in the top of the second. An Ashley Buirge double to center scored Megan Mullen. The second run came as Tyra Kerr homered to right field.

Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) came in relief of Anderson in the third inning. She gave up two hits in third but UMD would leave three ducks on the pond as she was able to get out of a tough spot.

Roberts took down the UMD line-up in order in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, UMD plated two runs on three hits. A Strantz single to center field scored Kierra Jeffers. A single by Jordan Rice to center field plated another run for the Bulldogs.

In the sixth inning, a Strantz double to left field scored Jeffers to chase Roberts from the game. BSU inserted Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) to get them out of the inning. Saralampi was able to get two outs, but a sacrifice fly from Rice did plate Hunecke.

Up 7-0 in the top of 7th, UMD added three more runs with a three-run shot to right field by Jeffers.

Anderson suffered the loss in game two for the Beavers after going two innings and giving up three earned runs on five hits. Julia Nealer got the win for the Bulldogs with a five-hit shutout.

BSU was led in the game by Beard, who went 3-for-3 to finish 5-for-6 in the doubleheader. Bowen and Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) also had hits in game two.

BSU will return to action against Northern State University on the road April 11.
