Beavers square off with Northern State in mid-week doubleheader

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University softball team will travel to Northern State University for a mid-week doubleheader Wed., April 11 at 2 and 4 p.m. at the Mocassin Creek Softball Complex in Aberdeen, S.D. The Beavers come into the weekend with a 9-24 (2-12 NSIC) mark. Northern State has a 16-20 (7-7 NSIC) record.

The Beavers are coming off four games with University of Minnesota Duluth last Thursday and Friday. The Bulldogs got the better of BSU in three of the four games but BSU rode a two-hit shutout from Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) to grab its first victory over the Bulldogs since 1999 in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader. BSU was also successful at getting to UMD ace Megan Mullen in Friday’s game as they got seven hits including the game-winner from senior short stop Megan Beard (Eveleth, Minn.) who drove in the decisive run with a single. Beard finished Friday 5-for-6.

Anderson comes into the games versus the Wolves as the clubhouse leader in the circle. Anderson is 6-8 with a 2.06 ERA on the season. She has struck out 105 batters on the season and she is holding opponents to a .251 batting average. Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) and Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) have also appeared for the Beavers. Saralampi has a 6.00 earned runs average in 63 innings while Roberts has a 6.78 ERA in 43.1 innings this year.

At the plate, Beard has been on a roll of late as her average is up to .292 on the season after a strong performance against In addition to Beard, BSU is led by Summer Monsrud’s (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) .298 batting average and 14 runs scored. Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) and Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) have also had success at the plate of late. Bowen is batting at a .282 clip while Benzie has a .257 average on the season.

The Beavers and Wolves split last season with BSU winning 3-2 in nine innings in game one but falling 3-0 in game two in the contest’s that were played in Bemidji.

Scouting Northern State

Northern State used its bats to secure a pair of sweeps against Minnesota State University Moorhead and University of Minnesota, Crookston last weekend. The Wolves are paced by Kelsey Robling’s .404 batting average with two home runs, 35 RBI and 23 runs scored. In addition to Robling, Northern State has Caitlin Moran, who is batting .369 with 36 runs scored.

In the circle, the Wolves are led by Kami Smesmo with a 7-10 mark and a 3.41 ERA in 115 innings pitched. In addition to Smesmo, Northern State will also use Kelli Bornander, who is 8-8 with a 4.37 ERA in 99.1 innings pitched this year.
