BSU swept in NSIC doubleheader by Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Bemidji State University softball team fell in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games against Northern State University Wednesday at the Mocassin Creek Softball Complex in Aberdeen, S.D. The Beavers lost 9-1 in five innings in game one and fell 5-0 in game two to the Wolves. BSU falls to 9-26 (2-14 NSIC). Northern State improves to 18-20 (9-7 NSIC) with the doubleheader victory.

The Wolves got to Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) early in game one. Northern State plated two runs in the bottopm of first after a Kelsey Robling sacrifice fly scored Caitlin Moran and an error by Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Virginia, Minn.) allowed Whitney Luhring to reach base and Brittany Huback to score.

Northern State added four more runs in the bottom of the second. An error by Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) at third base allowed Ashley Gabler to score to make it 3-0. A Huback double to left field scored two more runs off Anderson which forced head coach Rick Supinski to make the change and insert Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) to replace Anderson. Northern State added one more run in the inning off a Eryn Yancy sacrifice fly which scored Huback to make it 6-0.

The Wolves added one more run to their lead in the bottom of the fourth off Roberts on Morgan Schultz’s single to score Whitney Luhring.

BSU attempted to rally in the top of the fifth and was able to get one run in the inning. After reaching on a throwing error by Northern State pitcher Kami Smesmo, Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) scored on a Smesmo wild pitch.

Northern State added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-1 and end the game due to the eight-run mercy rule after five innings. Brooke Norris led off the frame with a triple and scored on a Moran single to center field. With the bases loaded, a Yancy sacrifice fly plated Moran for the ninth run.

Anderson got the loss for the Beavers after giving up five earned runs on five hits. Smesmo got the win for the Wolves after a three-hitter in the circle, while giving up one run to Bemidji State.

Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.), Loegering and Megan Bergeson (So., C/IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.) each had a hit for the Beavers in game one.

In game two, Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) got the start in the circle.

The Beavers started off the game strong putting two runners on base after a Beard single and Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.) reached on an error. But BSU was unable to plate the runners as Beard and Dupay were both stranded.

Northern State led off the bottom of the first with two runs off Saralampi as Moran, who reached on a passed ball, scored on a Robling triple to right field. The Wolves’ second run rounded the bases on a groundout to second base.

Both sides were taken down in order over the next five half innings until NSU exploded for three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Robling led off the inning with a double to right field and scored on a Luhring double. Luhring scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 4-0. A Gabler single to center field scored pinch-runner Sarah L’Allier for the fifth run.
