Beavers suffer doubleheader loss to St. Cloud State

BEMIDJI, Minn.- The Bemidji State University softball team dropped two to St. Cloud State University Sunday at BSU Softball Field. St. Cloud State’s Kelly Franks threw a no hitter in game one to lead the Huskies to a 4-0 win. In game two, St. Cloud State used a seven-run fifth inning to come away with a 13-7 victory over the Beavers in game two. Bemidji State fell to 10-29 (3-17 NSIC). St. Cloud State improved to 20-26 (6-14 NSIC). The two teams were able to get both games in despite the Bemidji area being plagued with rain for most of the day Sunday. The two games Sunday end BSU’s home dates and served as the final home affairs for BSU’s four seniors.

In game one of the doubleheader, Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) scattered one run on nine hits through the first six innings before giving up three runs, two of them earned on three hits in the top of the seventh inning.

Franks got the win in the no hitter for the Huskies after allowing only two base-runners in the game as Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) reached base on an error by Chris Saiz at second base and Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) reached base on a walk.

St. Cloud State’s first legitimate scoring chance came in the fourth inning as the Huskies had the bases loaded with no outs after singles from Jordan Grell, Nicole Steinle and Saiz. After securing one out, Bobbi Boomgarden hit a fly ball to center field where Loegering played the ball and made a throw to home where Grell was tagged out by Megan Bergeson (So., C/IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.)

The Huskies finally broke the scoreless streak in the fifth inning as Mikayla Hogan doubled to center field to plate Kelly Olson, who had reached on a walk to make it 1-0 in favor of St. Cloud State.

The Huskies added three runs in the top of the seventh. Samantha Kanak led off the inning with an infield single. In the next at bat, Olson reached on a fielder’s choice where Anderson attempted to get Kanak out at second but both runners were safe as Anderson was charged with an error. The next batter, Hogan, hit a double to left field to score Kanak. The Huskies added another run as Grell singled to drive in Olson. The Beavers then made a pitching change, inserting Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) to replace Anderson. After striking out Steinle, Saiz singled to left field to score Hogan and make it 4-0. Roberts was able to get out of the inning but BSU was unable to come back in the bottom of the seventh to give SCSU the win.

In game two of the doubleheader, Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) got the start in the circle for Bemidji State. After a scoreless first two innings by both sides, St. Cloud State plated five runs in the top of the third inning. Saralampi walked Bobbi Boomgarden to open up the inning. In the next at bat, Jackie Dooley hit a single to move Boomgarden to third. After getting one out, Olson reached on an error by second baseman Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) which allowed Dooley and Boomgarden to score. Hogan then doubled to center field to advance Olson to third. With two in scoring position, Grell doubled to drive in Hogan and Olson and make the game 4-0. Grell scored for the fifth run of the inning when Steinle singled up the middle.

BSU rallied for one run in the bottom of the third inning. Loegering reached on an error by Saiz to open up the inning. In the next at bat, SCSU pitcher Kendra Merritt hit Bergeson. Benzie drove in Loegering with a double to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Huskies. However, BSU was unable to plate their two runners in scoring position and remained at a deficit.

Bemidji State continued its rally in the fourth inning as with one out, Kelly Richards (Fr., C, Virginia, Minn.) hit a single to left field. After getting the second out, Bergeson reached on a fielder’s choice and the Huskies were unable to get Richards out at second base as Olson made an error at short stop. Merritt then hit Benzie to load up the bases. With two out and three on, Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) hit a double to center field to score all three runners and make it 5-4. The Beavers tied the game up on a Babinski single to center field which scored Beard.

Now with the game 5-5, BSU was unable to keep the game in a position where they could win it as the Huskies scored seven runs, none of them earned, in the top of the fifth inning to make it 12-5. Anderson came on in relief of Saralampi after giving up the seven runs in the fifth. St. Cloud State added a 13th run off Anderson in the top of seventh.

BSU did rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh but it was two little to late. Saralampi got the loss for BSU after giving up eight hits and 12 runs, five of them earned. Franks got the win for the Huskies as she came in to pitch the bottom of the fifth inning.

BSU’s bats were led in the game by Babinski, who was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Beard had one hit and three RBI while Benzie had a hit and two RBI.

Bemidji State will head to University of Mary for a mid-week doubleheader Tues., April 17 in Bismarck, N.D.
