Beavers wrap up NSIC slate at No. 10 Winona State and Upper Iowa

BEMIDJI, Minn.- The Bemidji State University softball team will wrap up their 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Sun Conference slate as they travel to No. 10 Winona State University Sat., April 21 for a doubleheader and trek to Upper Iowa University Sun., April 22 for a pair. The Beavers have put up a 10-31 (3-19 NSIC) mark improving their win total from the 2011 season as they finished 5-27 overall.

The BSU pitching staff is led by Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.), who has a 7-10 record and a 2.45 ERA in 131.1 innings pitched. Anderson needs just six strikeouts to surpass her 2011 total as she currently has 119 on the season. BSU has also frequently used Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) as a starter. She has a 5.54 earned runs average in 83.1 innings pitched.

At the plate, BSU will look to Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.), the reigning Beaver Pride Female Athlete of the Week, who is batting .281 with eight runs scored and leads the team with 11 RBI. Beard is joined in the line-up by Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) who is batting .269 with six runs scored and seven RBI.

Scouting Winona State


The Warriors are coming off a mid-week split with Wayne State College (Neb.). Winona State fell 2-0 in game one with the Wildcats but bounced back for a 5-1 victory in game two. Winona State is No. 10 in the nation and comes in with a 36-7 (17-5 NSIC) mark. They are currently in third place in the NSIC standings behind Minnesota State University, Mankato and Augustana College (S.D.).

The Warriors are led in the circle by Stace Struzynski, who boasts an 18-4 mark with a 0.80 ERA. Opponents are only batting .161 against Struzynski this season.

At the plate, Winona State is led by Molly Link, who is batting .428 with 34 runs scored, four home runs and 45 RBI. In addition, the Warriors have Kim Waccholder, who is hitting .348 and leads the team with 12 home runs and 46 RBI.

Scouting Upper Iowa

The Peacocks suffered four-straight losses Monday and Tuesday as they were swept by Northern State University and then No. 21 Augustana. Upper Iowa comes into the weekend with a 16-33 (8-14) record.

The Peacocks are paced in the circle by Kylee Knop, who is 8-16 with a 3.71 ERA in 154.1 innings pitched.

At the plate, Upper Iowa is led by Hailley Haning and Knop. Haning is batting .353 with 24 runs scored, five home runs and 27 RBI. Knop is hitting at a .352 clip and has 15 runs scored and 25 RBI.
