BSU wraps up NSIC slate with pair of losses to Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa-- The Bemidji State University softball team fell narrowly 1-0 to Upper Iowa University in game one and dropped game two to the Peacks 5-1 Sunday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa. Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) pitched a seven-hitter in game one and Kayla Babinski (Jr., IF, Devils Lake, N.D.) hit a home run in game two but neither were enough to overcome Upper Iowa. The Beavers fall to 10-35 (3-23 NSIC) as they concluded their conference slate with Sunday’s games. Upper Iowa improves to 18-35 (30-16 NSIC).

Anderson got the start in game one and went six innings giving up one earned run on seven hits while dealing out five strikeouts. The five fanned batters moved Anderson’s strikeout total to 128 moving her past her career-high 124 strikeouts during the 2011 season.

Despite the strong pitching outing, Anderson was bested in the circle by Kylee Knop who pitched a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in the first game.

BSU got hits in the first game from Babinski and Megan Bergeson (So., C/IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.)

Upper Iowa’s lone run of the opening game came as a Hailley Haning single plated Missy Olson, who had doubled for the Peacocks.

In game two of the doubleheader, Anderson again got the start for the Beavers and went four innings. She gave up only one run in the first four innings but was hit four four more runs, two of them unearned, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Brooklyn Koranda got the start for Upper Iowa and went 4.2 innings while giving up four hits and one earned run. Jenna Hermsen came in relief of Koranda and got the win. Hermsen went 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and no runs.

Upper Iowa got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when a Knop groundout plated Rachael Anello, who had doubled.

Bemidji State knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Babinski hit a solo-shot.

The Beavers were unable to keep the game knotted up as the Peacocks scored four runs in the fifth inning. Upper Iowa loaded the bases with no outs to lead off the inning. Katie Mnichowichz singled to left field to score Kayla Bergman for the first run. With the bases still loaded, Haning singled up the middle to plate Olson. With no outs and the bases remaining full of Upper Iowa baserunners, Anello singled to plate Whitney Williams.

BSU then brought in Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.) in relief to help secure an out in the inning. Saralampi struck out the first batter she faced. Upper Iowa then got a fourth run in the frame when Mnichowicz scored on a groundout.

The Beavers had seven hits, with one hit apiece from seven different players including Babinski, Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.), Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.), Nicole Dupay (So., OF, Woodbury, Minn.), Hannah Benzie (Jr., OF, Grand Rapids, Minn.), Anderson and  Saralampi.

The Beavers will wrap up the season Wednesday as they head to Valley City, N.D. to face Valley City State University in two nonconference games. The two teams split earlier this season when they met in Bemidji March 27.
