Beavers close out season with pair of losses to Valley City State

VALLEY CITY, N.D. -- The Bemidji State University softball team was swept by the Valley City State University Vikings Wednesday afternoon in Valley City, N.D. to conclude the 2012 season with a 10-37 (3-23 NSIC) record. Valley City State improves to 25-18 on the season. The Beavers won five more games this season under first-year head coach Rick Supinski then they did in 2011. BSU lost the first game 8-3 and fell in game two 4-1.

Allison Roberts (Fr., RHP, Crystal, Minn.) got the start in game one for the Beavers. Roberts went 4.2 innings giving up 10 hits and vie earned runs in the start. She suffered the loss for BSU before being relieved by Kelsey Saralampi (Jr., LHP, Esko, Minn.), who went 1.1 innings pitched and gave up three hits.

Katie McBride got the start for Valley City State going one inning and giving up one hit. Jennifer Shadlock came on in relief for the Vikings, going six innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits.

Valley City State got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Vikings’ first run came as Emma Nelson doubled to left field to score Shayna Taffinder and Shadlock. Valley City State added a third run as Cyndi Figol scored on a passed ball by Megan Bergeson (So., C/IF, New London-Spicer, Minn.)

The Vikings added a fourth run in the bottom of the fourth as Adrianna Boychuk reached on error by Crystal Bowen (Jr., IF, Duluth, Minn.) allowing Savannah McMillin to score.

The Beavers rallied in the top of the fifth inning as they closed within one run. Courtney Loegering (Sr., OF, Blaine, Minn.) doubled to center field to plate Cassie MacArthur (Fr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Bergeson to make it 4-2. The third run came as Megan Beard (Sr., IF, Eveleth, Minn.) reached on an error allowing Loegering to cross the plate.

Valley City State added to its run security in the bottom of the third. A McMillin singled to right field to score Nelson and Jane Pettit to make it 6-3. A Boychuk single plated Hilary Kulczewski. The eighth run of the contest scored for the Vikings as McMillin scored on a passed ball by Bergeson.

Loegering led the Beavers going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Summer Monsrud (Fr., OF, Bemidji, Minn.) went 2-for-4 on the game as did Kayla Babinski (Jr, IF, Devils Lake, N.D.).

In game two, Saralampi got the start in the circle going six innings and giving up 12 hits and four earned runs in the loss.

McBride pitched a three-hitter for the Vikings in game two as she got the victory and gave up one earned run.

After a scoreless first three innings, the Beavers got on the scoreboard first in game two as Babinski scored on an error which allowed Bowen to reach base.

Valley City State countered with four runs of their own on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Liz Hall singled to left field to score Kulczewski. With the bases still full of Vikings, Boychuk singled to right field to plate Hayley Bevan and Kati Reisenauer. Valley State added one more run as Sara Gullickson scored on a groundout. The four runs would be enough to come up with the win for the Vikings.

BSU was led in game two by Babinski who was 2-for-3. Monsrud had the other hit for the Beavers in game two.
